8/11 Practice Report

looking at the class layout, I have to wonder what the hell was Mack Brown thinking these last few years. Besides this last class of freshmen we have such little depth. Strong was right when he said he needs one more amazing recruiting class. I'm just hoping he can make that happen this year.

As the chart confirms. Mack was killing himself out there.

I think Mack was burnt out and in denial at the same time. I can't imagine how bad the program would be if he stayed for 1 our 2 more years.

A few highlights on the final scrimmage from  http://texas.thefootballbrainiacs.com/2015/08/final-scrimmage-notes/

By: Andrew King
Posted on: August 24, 2015
– Although the offense had some success early in the scrimmage (Strong mentioned the offense’s success in the post scrimmage meeting with the press), the defense absolutely dominated the offense as the scrimmage went on.

– Was told that the defense started to impose it’s will so much that at a certain point the offense was 1st and around 3 and the defense held them for 4 straight downs.

– Am told at that time, it was a bit of a mixture of first and second team players. Was also told that Heard took a snap and attempted to run the ball in. He apparently tried to hit the corner and Holton Hill ran him down and tackled him just before he got into the end zone.

– I’m told that Holton Hill and Kris Boyd both look the part. Am told they look “very natural and comfortableâ€. Apparently at certain points they were out there together.

– Did not get a list of the entire 1st team offensive line but was told that Vahe ran with the 1s at RG and Perkins was at RT

– I’m told that the defensive line was absolutely dominant. Early in fall camp when Ridgeway was out there were reports that the offensive line was winning a lot of battles. With Ridgeway in there, it’s another story.

– Apparently Ridgeway played like a man possessed. A source said that on one play he got into the backfield, grabbed the running back and threw him to the ground but not before he stripped the ball. He apparently recovered the fumble and ran it back for a touchdown.

– I’m also told that 3rd string quarterback Kai Locksley looked really good in Saturday’s scrimmage. Was told that he has a nice pocket presence, stands tall and doesn’t panic. Had at least one TD pass and am told would’ve had another but the receiver couldn’t quite haul it in. Source said that Locksley looks like he could be a really good quarterback for Texas down the road. “He didn’t look like a freshmanâ€.

One of the Dallas writers on "Five breakout players for the Texas Longhorns in 2015"

http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2015/08/five-breakout-players-for-the-texas-longhorns-in-2015.html/

Tyrone Swoopes, Jr., QB. Swoopes was thrown under the bus by the Longhorn faithful after his performance in Texas’ final two games where he threw a combined five interceptions. Despite his lackluster performance last season, the 6-foot-4, 244 pound quarterback has shrugged off the negativity and has put together a solid fall camp. Head coach Charlie Strong named him the starting quarterback entering fall camp and barring a setback, it appears Swoopes will keep his starting job when Texas takes on Notre Dame. While there is doubt surrounding him, if Swoopes emerges as the Longhorns starting quarterback this season, he’ll have an opportunity to breakout in 2015.

John Bonney, Fr., CB. Bonney is primed to be an impact player in 2015. After a redshirt year, Bonney was the starting nickel cornerback during spring practice and has continued to line up as the starter at that position during fall camp. Bonney is a player who has good instincts and will play key role at the nickel cornerback. With the loss of former nickel cornerback Quandre Diggs, the Longhorns will look for Bonney to replace a player who started 49 games for Texas. If he’s able to come in and be a solid cornerback, he’ll be a player who breaks out this season.

The current DT depth chat is;

Jackson --- Ridgeway

Ford ------- Boyette

Nelson -----Norman

DEs;

(lde) Davis -- (fox) Bluiett

Cottrell -------- Roberson/Hughes (who may still end up at LB)

Vasser -------- Omenihu

LBs:

(olb)Feeman(out/ankle)/Hughes --- (mlb)Jefferson/Jinkens ------- (olb)Jinkens

Wheeler, Cole, Hager, Townsend

Santos out

Safeties:

Haines ---- Hall

Elliott (out/toe) -- Locke (also working at nickel)

CBs:

(rcb) Thomas ---------- (lcb) Bonney/D_Davis/Echols (unclear) --------- (nickel) Bonney/Thomas/Locke/Hill/Vaccaro/possibly Boyd (position unclear for now)

(rcb) Boyd/Hill/A_Davis -------   ^^^                                                        ---------  ^^^

Sounds like Strong prefers that Hughes foucs on LB due to the bigger need there, but he is still working with both groups

With the Florida kid quitting, did they move or dual training Hughes to add depth ? Hughes is not a MLB.....WTH ?

No, he's not.  He's an OLB.

As shown above, Jefferson and Jinkens are battling to start in the middle.

Hager and Cole too (but, Cole imo, lacks the speed we want there).  Before the Spring Game, I admit I thought the MLB would be Cole/Cherry/Wheeler.  But then there was MJ in the middle.  And Wheeler is now an OLB and Cherry a Bull.

The LB depth issue (vs. the good depth on the DL) is why Strong wants Hughes practicing full-time at LB now

Bluiett moving to TE isn't all that surprising.

We are pretty loaded at Fox. Hughes and Roberson were likely ahead of Bluiett on the depth chart, and Omenihu has apparently looked good in fall camp. Someone at Fox needed to move positions.

Throw in the fact that Whiteley was injured and Bluiett played some TE in 2012 and 2013, it seems like a logical move.

I still think Roberson is the best player we have at fox. It will be interesting what we do with Hughes. We probably still need Hughes depth wise at Fox, but it seems like getting Hughes and Roberson on the field together would be wise.

Horns Digest is saying McNeal is working at primarily Wr. Interesting.
That's a bummer. I was hoping that McNeal would be our TE who could catch the ball down the field. Especially, since it doesn't look like Devo will be here this season.

My hope is that this is cross training and he can line up at TE, WR, and H back and can be effective at each position.

McNeal will be utilized all over the field. I wouldn't read too much into that. I just found it interesting that it was paired with the Bluiett news.

Strong on McNeal --

“He creates mismatch problems for the defense.

He’s a big receiver is what he is.

You can move him outside, and he can be a guy who can float for you.â€
