Great news for Merrick who refused offers from Virginia and Florida. I don't believe he's ready to compete for the starting job but it's nice to have bodies on scholarship at the position again.

Good news. Can he play this season, or must he sit out this year ? Why would he definitely red shirt ? I thought Charlie plays the best and camp hasn't started until 4:30 today...

He's eligible to play right away but is destined to redshirt because he's a guy who started football late in life and needs more development. I could see a scenario where they make him the number 3 emergency guy and redshirt Locksley but I doubt it.

Lots of comments in the Burnt Ends thread about whether Kai Locksley should or should not take a redshirt year. Having Merrick on campus definitely adds an interesting dynamic to that discussion, IMO.

Swoopes - 3rd year

Heard - 2nd year

Merrick - 1st year

If Locksley shirts, then his eligibility mirrors Merrick's. If he doesn't then it is the same as Heard's.
