A few weeks ago, on Burnt Ends, Matt reported there were rumors that Patterson might be trying to leverage the city of Austin to get involved with the construction and entertainment venues of the new UT basketball arena.

Today Kirk Bohls, of the AAS, is saying the Austin mayor is open to the idea as well.

I believe we can expect ATX and UT to negotiate an arrangement similar to what Louisville did with their Yum Center. It's arguably the premier venue in college basketball. UL leads the NCAA in revenue generated by their hoops program, too.

I love new Austin Mayor Steve Adler’s open-minded attitude. The longtime Austinite, who has lived here 36 years, told me Friday that not only is he interested in the idea of the city luring a Major League Soccer franchise to our town, but he’s entirely open to collaborating with the University of Texas about a new multipurpose arena to serve as the school’s replacement for the Erwin Center as well as an entertainment venue. When asked if the city would be reluctant to partner with Texas on such a venture, Adler said, “I don’t start with that premise. A large entertainment venue would bring a lot of benefits to the city, but how it would be done remains to be seen. I’m not opposed to anything. I’d keep everything on the table. It should be part of larger conversations.”

Man, I couldn't agree more.  The only people that care about that shin kicking game are foreigners and illegal aliens.  Houston is trying to make a go of professional soccer.  They even built a nice stadium for it.   IMO, like hockey puckey, it will eventually fold.

Ha - it's true.  However, Houston has  a huge contingent of snowbirds as well.  Yet, Ice hockey died on the vine.  I went to several Aeros matches and I still don't understand the rules.  It's like Cricket - don't even ask about those rules.

JMO but the Spurs and their allies at all levels would fight like hell against MLB or NFL, not that either is terribly likely. The Spurs own the city and after a helluva run a downturn is inevitable at some point. they won't want the competion from other sports. (MLS doesn't count).

Y'all should get NHL there and stick it in the new arena.  We did that here in Nashville after we build our large downtown arena and it's gone over really well.  The carpetbaggers here love it.

Hey now. Just because you don't like soccer, which is fine, doesn't mean you get to belittle those of us that do. Some of us, like myself, do like soccer, and I'm neither a foreigner nor an illegal alien. I'm living in Houston and I go support the Dynamo when I have the time and money for a ticket (which, unfortunately, isn't too often). And if you think it's going to fold, you obviously haven't been paying attention to MLS over the past 10 years. Obviously it's not as big as many other sports, but it's growing in fan support and visibility year after year.

Now would it work in Austin? That's a different story altogether lol I would agree with y'all that MLS has a better chance in SA.

MLS is much more likely since SA already has a very successful NASL team (essentially the second division of professional soccer) that has both success (defending champions) and good fan support. And the fact that there's no way in Hell they can take any attention from Los Spurs lol much easier to coexist in that case I think.

i cant believe too many Austinites especially where the money is on the west and NW sides would drive to NB or too many S Antonians would drive to S Marcos for baseball. 

Ft Worth and Dallas are about 35 miles apart. SA and ATX closer to 80.
