Jay Norvell to be hired - confirmed by UT

After I studied the Norvell hire a little, I got very enthused how this hire may have a very positive impact on the team.

If some or all of the following has already been posted… apologies.

This article by 247 has made several good points, including:
  • Norvell was heavily involved in Oklahoma's offense as the co-offensive coordinator from 2011-2014. Strong was said to be looking for someone with knowledge of tempo-oriented offenses with some element of a quarterback run game from spread formations
  • When Norvell arrived at Oklahoma in 2008 is when the Sooners started cranking up the tempo
  • Norvell recruited Central Texas for the Sooners, but more importantly for Texas is he'll be able to help the Longhorns get into Southern California and the rest of the state. Norvell had a hand in helping the Sooners land players like Kenny Stills, Tony Jefferson and Brennan Clay among others from the talent-rich area
  • Norvell was named the Big 12 Recruiter of the Year by 247Sports in 2012 for serving as the primary recruiter for several of Oklahoma's top targets, including current All-Big 12 wide receiver Sterling Shepard
  • Norvell as some familiarity with the Texas staff. Norvell worked with Texas assistant head coach for offense Shawn Watson at Nebraska in 2006
  • Norvell also comes to Texas with NFL experience

If the SoCal connection is true and proves out, this could give the Horns a pipeline into Texas, South Florida and SoCal… the 3 most consistently fertile recruiting areas in the country.

If it’s also true that Charlie is “looking for someone with knowledge of tempo-oriented offenses with some element of a quarterback run game from spread formations,†then this may mean that Charlie sees Heard as a very viable option next year. Heard just may be the QB we need in Charlie's eyes.

So, this hire, the opening of SoCal to Texas, plus the possible move to up tempo spread… and the maturing of Heard might just help solve one of the team's biggest issues… and bode very well for the intermediate and long term success of the program, IMHO.

Please, please, please.....

Give me a break. Assistant coaches change jobs all the time. Would you say the same thing about the rest of our coaches? My long experience with coaches is that most are professionals who take pride in their work. It is not just about a paycheck.
This is a new world we are living in and it is going to take some time for the old traditionalists like myself to adapt. Back in my day, we didn't have coaches on the staff that made public statements that were, in effect, "Go OU" and "F@#K Texas." In the old days, UT coaches didn't broadcast newspaper stories of OU shellacking Texas and while they were on the UT staff didn't publicly post pictures of themselves smiling broadly in the middle of the OU team throwing the down horns.

I understand that Nick and the crew inside Bellmont are shy about asking Coach Norvell to change his anti-Texas pictures on his social media pages to something a bit more neutral. Having UT coaches publicly associating themselves with OU and not UT is something that will take some of us traditionalists a bit of getting used to. Coach Norvell has left the picture up for a while now and obviously isn't in any rush to bring it down. Obviously, it means something to him.

My problem isn't that he has a strong sentimental attachment to his "F@#K Texas" memorabilia. I just would rather him not act as if he places any importance on Texas traditions or the University of Texas. I understand his "F@#K Texas" message will be something us old timers need to get used to.  If he isn't ready to downplay those sentiments by changing his social media page, don't expect us traditionalists to be ready to embrace his sentiments. The whole "F@#K Texas" sentiment of members of the Texas coaching staff is going to be something some of us warm up to slowly.

My old fashioned sensitivities aside, can someone PLEASE get the message to someone inside the program to get the picture taken down?

This was a good hire. He brings credibility to the position and could help on the recruiting side a lot.

No, I don't like the f' Texas stuff, but let's face it, we need to get this train back on track and he can help us do that. Being he is a position coach they do tend to be more mercenary type.

Now let's get a top notch TE/ST coach and we will be good. This team has a ton of work to do on both Offense and Special Teams. Both need to be a lot better next year just to be considered decent.

I'm fine with the coaches being mercenaries who don't care about where they work and are just in it for the money. I would prefer he take down the anti-UT pictures from his social media accounts, but that is just me.

And, if it is just a paycheck, no more talk about Texas traditions. Hookers don't get to preach family values. No flashing the Hook 'Em and no singing the Eyes of Texas after the game. Just pick up your paycheck, go home and leave the traditions to people who will be around next week. The players and the fans understand he doesn't care about Texas traditions. He shouldn't just pay lip service to something that means nothing to him.
This is pretty ignorant viewpoint, Duke. Big surprise coming from you. It sounds Monarchesque.

Duke, I am probably as old fashioned as it gets. Would remind you that FB, Twitter, and all of that crap have not been around very long. I suspect that Norvell will pull that stuff down to the extent he can. But once it is out there, we are all stuck with it.

Just deal with it and let it go.

Good post. This information on Norvell that he may help with an spread offense is good news if you believe Heard is our best option next year. Along with the rumor that CS and Watson were at Jerrod's high school yesterday may also mean they are going to run an offense that fits Jerrod's skills.

Also, Norvell helping with recruiting in California is an added benefit. If we get four or five recruits from California and Florida that would help supplement our recruiting in Texas.

duke, I'll wager I'm older than you and all this stuff you're in a dither over is white noise to me.
Can he recruit and can he coach? If the answers are yes nothing else is important. If the answers are no, it wouldn't matter if he dyed his hair orange and named his kid Bevo.

Darrell K. Royal played for OU. I'm quite certain he said ugly things about Texas during his playing time there. We hired him anyway.

Norvell was on OU staff. The anti-Texas stuff is pretty much expected of them.

Stoops fired Norvell against his will. Was told to make changes, Norvell and Huepel were the obvious choices. Stoops didn't want to let Norvell go. I'm willing to bet the problems at OU will continue.

Agree.  Norvell would probably still have his job at OU, but he made one mistake. He's not Stoops brother.

thank God. I was so effing pissed as a longhorn and a traditionalist I couldn't see straight. Now, maybe, just maybe, if he does the job he was hired to do, the healing process can begin.
Also, don't forget you'll be able to move your bowels better that may be why you couldn't see straight.

Well my wife was raised in an aggie family and when we were dating in high school, she had all aggie clothes and jewelry. Heck her plan was to go to a&m to be a Civil Engineer. After things got serious she decided to go to UT instead and is now a die hard Longhorn fan. Her dad never has fully forgiven me.

She likes to joke that I saved her.

Now we can say we have saved yet another lost soul that had to work at OU. He will be grateful and ready to destroy his old team!

They fired him, I'm sure he will be ready to stick it to Stoops.

I think it is a great hire by Strong and one I didn't even think about.. Norvell is a plus recruiter with a great deal of connections. One of the good things about him is he can develop receivers. He wasn't the reason for the struggles at OU this year.
