2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

I think he's just having fun with it. He probably has a really good idea where he's going already but he's an 18 year old kid that watches people go crazy every time he so much as hints about where he plans on going. I'm not going to let it bug me too much 3 weeks and all this is over

Juan

Wtf do those Boyd tweets mean?

Hill and Boyd are taking their OVs together to Austin this weekend

Boyd's tweet about the latest incarnation of his Top 5, I think, is messing with the recruiting media.  You have to admit it's a little odd to have so many grown stalk these kids, stay in contact with them and make their livings off them

For example, here is Texas commit DeShon Elliott tweeting about the Boyd tweet and reaction.  (I can't embed it) --

I think Boyd is 100% Texas. I think he's been 100% Texas for quite some time. I think he's just having fun trolling some fan bases and recruiting analysts.

now what do we do or think........GOOD GOSH......

this recruiting thing is confusing or confusion.....maybe

One thing someone else wrote that made some sense when comparing the staff's patience with Burt vs. our apparent short leash for Irvin -- is that Burt was upfront and honest about everything going on with his situation while Irvin may have been more coy and not fully forthcoming with regard to his.  That was just speculation, but it rang the bell of truthiness.  Also, if you recall the 24 hour period before his announcement at the all star game (when he committed to us in front of his family and a national TV audience), he was supposedly not answering his phone (even from coaches).  He may be doing that again.  Not a good sign if true.

For his part, Burt supposedly phoned the staff the next morning after the de-commit with much regret.  Nonetheless, the ways things are stacking up, Burt may still be standing when this version of musical chairs stops.  Besides Lodge, I am still optimistic Strickland sets his visit and it is the same weekend as Wheeler.

Another thing about Irvin is the possibility that, if he does switch, it could ripple down to Davis who is still taking OVs.  Davis is a big corner who seems to fit what Strong wants, so he would be big loss.  And he looks to Irvin and wants to be on the same defense with him, as the string of tweets I showed a couple pages back shows.  OTOH, we have been working hard to bring in several other highly ranked CBs, most of whom fit that same mold.  And, from what I've read, we are in very good shape with Hill & Boyd.

The other Florida 5 guys aren't going to waiver.  We just have to get a couple of them into school and keep them pointed in the right direction.

But back to Irvin, the problem that would remain is that Irvin himself is not easily replaceable,  He fills the physical safety/nickel role (+ punt returner) while the other DB recruits coming in fill the man-coverage, boundary corner role.  So, Irvin would be tough loss IMO.  As we would be for him IMO, given our penchant for the 3-3-5 which he is perfect for.  Call it a loss for both sides.
On Irvin not answering his phone, has to be speculation b/c has been a dead period for sometime now, so technically coaches are not allowed to call recruits anyway...

Jeff Howe takes a crack at the depth chart on offense & defense with the 2015s (the 25 current verbal commitments).

Several things jump out for me (besides QB) - lack of depth at RB (imagine injury to Gray), the importance of Tim irvin (I wonder if Freeman has coverage skills for nickel?), how CB might change with Hil/Boyd/Fields

Here is some of the commentary -

".....

The offensive line is where things are very much subject to change. It's quite possible Jake Raulerson and Marcus Hutchins battle it out for the starting job at left tackle and the loser will likely be the backup at both tackle spots. The interior of the line should return in-tact, but Patrick Vahe could wind up cracking the two-deep in his first season. Right tackle is the most interesting position, and we've got Brandon Hodges there for now, but keep an eye on Connor Williams to possibly make a move at either tackle spot when he steps on campus for the start of the spring semester next week.

Outside of Marcus Johnson, there are spots available for incoming players to claim at wide receiver. It wouldn't be a shock if the X position was an -OR- between Gilbert Johnson and DeAndre McNeal as both will play in their first season on campus. If Texas does add another receiver, it would likely be someone to come in at compete for reps with Johnson at the Z position."

And some for the defense --

"Shiro Davis is one of the seniors who needs to get it gear because Quincy Vasser is coming in to claim a starting spot. He profiles nicely as the 5-technique Cedric Reed played this past season and since Chris Rumph recruited him it's likely that Davis will need to prove this spring that he's simply the better player to claim a starting job. With Derick Roberson having redshirted this past season and with the end positions not hurting for depth, it's possible both Charles Omenihu and Louis Brown will be given the chance to sit and develop.

Du'Vonta Lampkin could potentially redshirt, but any further attrition at defensive tackle might make that unlikely. Chris Nelson is coming off of a shoulder surgery and Alex Norman battled a back problem all fall, so it's not crazy to think Lampkin will have a chance to play early behind Hassan Ridgeway, the returning Desmond Jackson, Poona Ford and Paul Boyette.

Right now linebacker is where the signees will provide an impact the most defensively. We've got Malik Jefferson slotted as the starting weakside linebacker while Anthony Wheeler and Cecil Cherry could both push Dalton Santos in the middle. Cameron Townsend could also see the field as backup and as a special teams player.

The position likely to change the most in terms of projections between now and signing day is defensive back. We've gone ahead and given DeShon Elliott a starting safety spot next to Jason Hall simply because the Longhorns need an upgrade in talent on the back end. Tim Irvin will start at nickelback immediately, and while he's listed as the No. 3 free safety on the depth chart, there are multiple positions where Jamile Johnson can contribute....."

Burton suggesting DeMarkus Lodge may not visit this weekend, per his coaches

OB is sticking with Lodge visiting aggy this weekend

The post above^ saying Lodge would be in Austin this weekend was from Scout

So, we have a conflict it appears

Who will be correct? (I am pulling for Scout)

Read on another site that Irvin talked to the Texas coaches this past Saturday and they told him they did not want him visiting Auburn.

Auburn is also supposedly trying to convince him to enroll for the summer session.

He has already graduated high school, and Auburn classes start this week.

Auburn247 (Keith Niebuhr) reached Tim's HS coaches -- They say he hasnt decided if he will visit Auburn or not.  He was going to visit but then he talked to Strong and Strong made it clear he doesnt want him to go.  His closeness with TRob is the draw there.

So, according to the gurus, it's up in the air at the moment (go figure)

That said, the decision seems simple, doesn't it?  If he wants  a starting spot in 2015, enroll now and play Spring Ball

If he sits out the Spring at Auburn, he will be missing alot

Tim Irvin is a midget at 5'9" (and I have heard he is really around 5'8").  A quick midget, to be sure, but a midget never the less - that won't be able to cover tall receivers.  Receivers like Harris for instance.

We would take him, but we shouldn't stress over losing him.  Like I said about Burt and receivers - we have better DB's already on campus.  Wouldn't you agree?

Now, Davis is a different story.

Irvin fits a particular niche on our defense

I dont know that we have an easy replacement for him on campus now -- he is strong despite his height, he can be physical (see his high school highlight where punishes receivers and backs play after play), he can play close if necessary, he has the quick hips/feet of a punt returner, he can cover slot guys.

Of the 2015 recruits, maybe Mark Fields?  Fields has the speed but I dont know if he can be as physical

But youre right that we have (or will soon have) enough bodies to put someone out there.  It's just that Irvin comes ready to go

What do the rest of you guys think?

I would say they singled him out for a reason. After a few times getting hit, the receivers start looking for him instead of the ball.
