He was a former commit who left us back in the early summer. I would be highly surprised to see him surface again as I don't think things were rosy when we parted ways.

Folks, we land yet another commit to our list tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Prepare to welcome aboard Mr. Gilbert Johnson, a huge pick up for us offensively and another 4-star player.

He's been committed for several weeks, but we get to see it official tomorrow. The Florida Five is complete.

i agree i will be highly shocked ...but then again I will go with Mr. Grande and Higdons assessment on the remaining targets

My aggy friends sure have gotten quiet over this past week. The bowl game glow didnt last long for them. Their heads will explode if we were to land Mack. Explode I say!

That may not be a bad deal.  In my opinion, kids out of programs like Aledo, South Lake, Lake Travis and others never become that superstar that is bestowed on them in high school.

Those type schools just reload really good athletes in a system where they excel.

Newsome is probably one of the most underrated players in the state.  The kid is a baller.  To say hes overrated is just ridiculous.

Lots of recent activity with Newsome and Tennessee. That's an about face to what we saw just a couple weeks ago. Newsome was ready to come. Something has happened, IMO.
I really wanted this kid in the group.  He was so high on horns for a long time.  Wonder why the change of heart?

FWIW - Texas is looking pretty good at WR and just picked up a legitimate weapon at returner in Irvin, I don't know if they necessarily need Newsome anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love the kid, but maybe the staff wasn't willing to wait it out until NSD for him.

Been rumors of Tenn for awhile, and they really picked up steam after his buddy Kirkland committed there.

You are reading too much in to what I said.  I never said Newsome was "overrated".

It wouldn't surprise me if Newsome's "ship has sailed".

Like I said earlier in the thread, there are much more dire needs. Mcneal and Johnson make 2 WRs. I think we end up with either Burt or Strickland. There's no reason Texas should take more than 3 WRs for a plethora of reasons.

I will say this, Newsome is a hell of a player. I understand focusing on more critical needs though.

Using the ESPN 300

Texas haz 12

aggy haz ONLY 10 (and that's if they hold Murray)

Gilbert Johnson, WR - (Homestead, FL)
Roughly the same height as Strickland but outweighs him (his height listed on 247 is incorrect I believe)

This is from IT --
How he fits at Texas: Johnson can really go up and get it and has great height and length for the position. He's pretty fluid and coordinated for a big receiver and has several absurdly acrobatic catches on his highlight reel. When he's playing at 210, he'll be a powerful menace similar to John Harris that could provide Texas a great possession receiver. - IB

Coach says: I like this kid. He's a big receiver who high-points the ball and goes and gets it at its highest point. Got some Larry Fitzgerald to his game. Seems to pluck the ball out of the air at times and went up and Moss’d a few DBs on tape. I like that he is able to break a tackle after the catch and is able to get some YAC. Not just a big receiver, he can do anything with the rock after he gets it. Get this kid qualified quickly.

How this affects Texas: The upside on Johnson is tremendous. Originally with the Class of 2014, Johnson signed with Georgia last February but couldn't qualify. The 6-foot-4 pass-catcher went the military school route and hopes to ink with a D-1 this signing period. Strong has gotten close Johnson, who won't decide until NSD. He's part of the Florida group looking to make Austin home next season. If he qualifies, he's a steal in every sense of the word. This kid is a talent. - JW
