Breakdown: Four-star guard Eric Davis commits to Texas
Eric Davis took the podium after a short introduction for his press conference at Arthur Hills (Mich.), announced he was heading to Texas, donned a hat and that was it.
Just like that, one of the best scorers in the class of 2015 was heading to Austin.
He chose the Longhorns over fellow finalists UNLV, Kentucky, LSU, North Carolina State, Michigan and Michigan State. Davis had taken official visits to Texas and UNLV, while unofficially visiting every other school on his list besides LSU.
Davis is Rick Barnes and Texas' first commitment for the class of 2015.

How he fits at TexasTexas had a need for a scoring guard in the class of 2015, and Davis certainly fits the bill. He's one of the better scorers in the country, capable of getting baskets in different ways. He can knock down shots in the mid-range and from the perimeter, although he could be a little more consistent on his 3-point attempts. Moreover, Davis can get his own shot against most defenders, whether getting to the basket off the dribble or pulling up inside the arc. Davis is capable of big numbers, too, as evidenced by his 34 points against Each 1 Teach 1 during the Nike EYBL season and his 32-point performance at the NBPA Top 100 camp.
Texas has plenty of ball-handlers and smallish guards on its roster for the 2014-15 season and beyond -- but Davis gives the Longhorns an added dimension from the moment he steps on campus. If Isaiah Taylor is still around for his junior year, he and Davis will form one of the more dynamic backcourts in the Big 12. Javan Felix, DeMarcus Holland, Kendal Yancy, Damarcus Croaker and Martez Walker (depending on what happens with his off-court issues) will also return at the guard positions for the 2015-16 season.
What it means for Texas' classLooking at Texas' scholarship chart, the Longhorns only have one scholarship to give for the class of 2015, with forward Jonathan Holmes the lone senior on the roster. Davis is obviously taking up that scholarship. With that said, the Longhorns might not be done with their recruiting this year. In addition to Taylor, Barnes could also be at risk of losing two more players to the NBA: Cameron Ridley and incoming freshman Myles Turner. Walker's situation could also be a factor moving forward.
Kerwin Roach has Texas on his final list of schools, and the Longhorns were the heavy favorites in the 247Sports Crystal Ball. However, he's another 6-3 guard. Both Roach and Davis can also play with the ball in their hands, and an early departure from Taylor could open up another spot in the backcourt. The bigger thing to watch for the Longhorns could be their frontcourt situation. Ridley and Turner are risks to leave early for the NBA, while Holmes is a sure thing. Maryland transfer Shaq Cleare will be eligible in 2015-16, but Jordan Barnett and Connor Lammert are the only other frontcourt players on the roster. Barnes could get involved with big men in the spring.
Which school loses the most?It's not entirely clear. Texas seemed to become the favorite in recent weeks, but there were several other schools making moves for him during the summer. UNLV was on his list, but the Runnin' Rebels have prioritized Jalen Coleman and also have Jalen Poyser on their radar. LSU never received a visit from Davis. Kentucky never offered. North Carolina State, Michigan State and Michigan were in the mix, too.
Let's take a look at the two in-state schools. No matter what, it's still hard to let a top-50 prospect leave the state. Michigan State already has commitments from guard Kyle Ahrens and athletic five-star frontcourt prospect Deyonta Davis, and the Spartans' top target moving forward is center Caleb Swanigan. In terms of backcourt players, former SMU commit Matthew McQuaid could be an option. Michigan has been going very strong at four-star prospect P.J. Dozier, and the Wolverines likely prioritized him as their backcourt target.
