Mistakes. . . .sum up this game in one word, mistakes.
TEXAS was playing short handed with a brand new QB and three
OLs who should be running 2nd string.
The one thing we had to have was a clean game. What we got. . . mistake fest.
I should probably mention early, BYU is a better football
team than many realized and they played for the most part, mistake free
football. One piece of good news, Taysom
Hill is likely the best QB we face this year. . .the good news. . .we don't face
him again. Instead of running wild this
year, he carved us up, played smart and hung 40 on the Horns in back to back
years.
After a great 1st half by our D, holding BYU to 6 points and
highlighted by Hill's biggest mistake, a poorly thrown ball (should have thrown
it a tad short where his 6'6" WR had a chance to make a play) and Diggs is
there for the INT to blunt a late 2nd quarter drive that might have put us in a
huge hole.
Mattered little, 2nd half opens, BYU drives the length of
the field capped by a 32 yard run by Hill through arm tackles to take a 13-0
lead. We open from our own 11, go 3 and
out and give the ball right back. BYU
simply manhandles us on drive #2 for TD #2 of the quarter. KO, we get called for holding and start
inside the 10. 3 and out, give the ball
back. . well at least we took one deep shot (I'll get to that later). BYU, another TD drive. KO,
Marcus Johnson fumble. . .sorry, you HAVE to secure the ball. . another BYU
short field, another TD. . . less than 11 minutes in the 2nd quarter and BYU
has put 28 on the board.
After playing masterfully in the 1st half, the D came out
and spit the bit. Sorry, no way to spin
that. Granted, it's a team game and
they got ZERO help from the O. But they
spit the bit in the 3rd quarter not the 4th.
I do have to say, Malcom Brown is a freaking beast. . on some of his bull rushes he just tossed the defender aside.
Swoopes did have a nice TD drive of his own capped off by a
nice catch and run by John Harris where he bowls over an opponent TD for the
2nd week in a row. Harris had a nice
game. . ..if not for his fumble in the 1st half to kill a drive. . .did I
mention mistakes?
Swoopes was good, close to great at times. His
accuracy was far better than I thought but everything was short, they had 8 in
the box, throw a seam route. They had 8
in the box, roll him out and let him use his feet. They had 8 in the box, run some misdirection,
run a roll out with a WR or TE dragging behind the LBs. Where was Jacoby Warrick to run a speed sweep
or frankly Marcus Johnson or Jaxson Shipley.
Do something DIFFERENT. Did I
mention push the ball down the field?
Run a deep cross or post behind the roll out. I get you are trying to protect Swoopes
psyche but game plan was too conservative.
After going 4-12 last week on 3rd down, we fell to 3-15 this
week. You cannot be that limited on
offense and constantly put yourself in 3rd and long.
UCLA is coming to town and they smell blood in the
water. They have a chance to make an
early statement while TEXAS' name still has some panache. Hundley isn't as good as Hill but he's not
far off, he's like the #2 QB we face this year.
Ranking the BigXII
Baylor hate ranking them this high for beating up tomato
cans. Don't get too impressed with that
SMU win, UNT kicked SMU's azz about as bad.
Still, no one else to put in the 2 hole
beating up their tomato can than OSU did, both coming off "aggie like
moral losses" to better teams
OSU
can, this time UTEP. . game just starting as I type this
KSU tempted to drop
them further, do you penalize them for stinking up the joint for 2 quarters or
reward them for coming back vs a weak team in the 4th??? Who knows.
drop us further. . .we play a team with a pulse and get whipped. . This is
where big time coaches earn their keep.
Kansas whipped a
tomato can
ISU they did give
KSU a scare but end of the day. . .they lost.
Anyone cares, I'm guesting on 1160 KVCE radio on a friend's Veteran based show, 1-3 on Sunday.
