The Morning After

Chris, sorry, but I disagree with you.  I realize that you are an expert, and I am a woman that has only observed, but here is my take:

     1)  The defense doesn't just deserve praise because they needed it!  The defense was NASTY!  Please point out how many missed tackles you saw?  How many total yards did UNT gain?  At what point did UNT cross mid-field?  Did UNT score an offensive TD?

How many defensive penalties did you see?  Now, I have not had an opportunity to rewatch the game, granted, but I believe you totally understated the quality of their performance.

Puh-leeze!  After the improvements this defense made over the off season, they deserve the praise.

     2)  Ash looked good at times and great when he had time, and that was with a patchwork offensive line, and Shipley?!?  Give the guy his due, for goodness sake, he is not Troy Aikman!  We need to get on our knees and thank God for every minute that David plays for us.  He has more courage than most college quarterbacks combined.

I would imagine that from this point forward, until the O-line stabilizes, we will see boots and waggles.  Ash looked good on the roll-outs.  Raulerson will get better with 1st team reps.  Will be interesting to see if he stays at center or moves out to another position on the line.

That's my take, and I'm sticking to it, until I see evidence to the contrary.  I will rewatch later today, unless the DVR let me down.  Don't think my enthusiasm was overboard on the D or Ash.

What say the rest of you?

Thanks, Duke! Our D was so impressive! It was a steel door that clanged shut after every snap. Strong is a wizard.

1. The LSU-Wisconsin game is fixed. I went to bed early because of early morning activites so I turned it in early last night to Matt.

2. java, Women know a ton about football. I know plenty of women who have beaten me in what penalties apply in what situations and historical knowledge of college football. If I implied that women don't know anything about football, I sincerely apologize.

3. The Texas defense was nasty LAST NIGHT but I will withhold judgment until after the BYU game to see if they are going to be a top 10 defense and one that this 2014 team can rely on moving forward.

4. The offensive line is an issue and with Dom Espinoza likely out the next 2 games (just by looking at similar injuries to offensive lineman in the past), that puts the spotlight straight on Joe Wickline to get this fixed soon. They may have to make some playcalling adjustments to negate the weaker (potentially) offensive line but with good pass rushers on both BYU and UCLA, the offensive line needs to step up big time.

The LSU/Wisconsin bit was my fault. Chris wrote as an either/or because he submitted his article before it was done.

Late night in the press box + early morning for church = My mistake when I published it this morning.
That's why I hate late night game. Most of the time, I have early Sunday morning plans (and so do you) so it makes it tough. Love 2:30pm games though.

I agree with you on the defense. They deserve all the praise because they just flat out stoned UNT. I'm a little torn on David Ash and am waiting till the BYU game to see what we really have. Yes at times he looked good and he did't turn the ball over, he also looked very average for most of the game. He needs to be more accurate than a completion percentage of 55% for this offense to be effective (IMHO). i

I realize it was his first game back and the O line might create some challenges so that's why I'm waiting till next week to see exactly how good he will be.

Chris,

You didn't imply that you knew more than I do; however, it would be presumptuous of me to think I knew more than someone who has played. Well, I will qualify that...any reasonable person knows more than some of the clowns out there.

We need to give credit where credit is due. This defense played lights out. They can only play the opponent they were dealt, so we don't need to predict they will win the Natty, but we should acknowledge that they kicked UNT's butts and then wrote down their names.

It's not our job to keep them grounded. We have a coach that can handle that just fine. btw, I said days ago that UCLA is a mystery. It still is, but even more so at this point.

I hope that Wick get it fixed, but it doesn't put the spotlight on him. It puts the spotlight on the crappy job that Mack and his merry band of recruiters did , as well as, the poor job Mack did of development. Does anyone really think freshmen are supposed to start on the offensive line, or that they have the strength of a 3rd year sophomore/4th year junior.

Wick will get the most out of his guys.

Ash did very very well, and he never flinched. COURAGE

Fair enough. I see your point. I disagree with it just because of my personal preference but I guess I could try to be a little more forgiving in a way.

They did kick North Texas's butt and in my book, they pitched a shutout.

Some opening lines I've seen --

Texas -4.5 vs BYU

Surprising?

Others

ND -5.5 vs Michigan

OSU -12 vs VT

Stanford -4 vs USC

Maybe that's just Vegas trying to steal enthusiastic Texas fans' money?

That's the only line for our game I have seen, others are not out yet.
