Big 12 Media Days - Day 1

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby just kicked off Media Days with his state of the conference speech.

Bowlsby discussing the new Big 12 logo, mentioning market testing.  Said the new logo tested really well among 18-35 year olds.

Bowlsby on player safety:   Helmet to helmet contact will continue to be called aggressively.

First female official in the Big 12 will be in the Southeast Missouri game vs. Kansas in Lawrence.

On the potential of paying players, Bowlsby says it is difficult to project paying football and basketball players and not others.  Says football and basketball players don't work any harder than student-athletes in other sports.

Commissioner Bowlsby discussing a lengthy list of challenges/concerns related to the NCAA headed into the future.  Financial situation is of concern due to roughly a 2% increase in revenue and a 4% increase in expenses.

On recruiting he says "Maintaining the status quo is not going to work."

On lawsuits (including O'Bannon case) he says these will ultimately cause programs to go away (mentions Olympic sports programs).

When asked about the Big 12 not having a conference championship game and if that will hurt the conference in the new college football playoff format Bowlsby says he likes the Big 12's path to the college football championship game.  Says some years it might but other years it won't.  Says the fact that playing all teams in the league is a beneficial thing.

Also of note, Bowlsby made the comment in reference to the NCAA discussion that "it is not an understatement to say that cheating pays."  When asked about the comment by Brian Davis (Statesman), he clarified that he doesn't think cheating is rampant in college football.

what does that mean ?

Art Briles and Baylor are up next.  Stay tuned.

Baylor player representatives:

QB Bryce Petty

DE Shawn Oakman

WR Antwan Goodley
LB Bryce Hager

Question for Petty: How different does he think his career would be if he would have stayed in Tennessee where he originally committed?

what does that mean ?

STP, He mentions the incessant lawsuits related to paying players has the potential to divert a significant amount of $ to other purposes.  This was in conjunction with him talking about the NCAA "heading down a path of extreme financial difficulty."
