Texas continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail, securing a major victory on Thursday by flipping 3-star athlete Charlie Jilek from his commitment to Minnesota. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound standout from Portage Central High School in Portage, Michigan becomes one of the most versatile additions to the Longhorns’ 2026 class and fills a key need at tight end.

Jilek is rated the No. 98 athlete nationally and the No. 22 player in Michigan for the 2026 cycle  and his skill set stretches far beyond traditional positional labels.

A Midwest Standout With Big-Time Tools

Jilek has been on the radar for Power Five programs thanks to a rare combination of size, athletic fluidity, and physicality. At 6’5” and 225 pounds, he already looks like a college-ready tight end and plays with a demeanor that jumps off the tape. Whether lined up on offense or roaming as a hybrid linebacker, Jilek brings toughness, intelligence, and a relentless motor.

The flip from Minnesota to Texas underscores just how valuable he is to college staffs looking for multi-dimensional athletes.

Tight End Evaluation: Big Frame, Big Upside

Texas loves tight ends who can function as complete players,  threats in the passing game and tone-setters in the run game and Jilek checks every one of those boxes.

What He Brings as a Tight End:

  • Elite size and length: towers over defenders and plays even bigger than listed.
  • Agile mover in space: surprisingly light on his feet for a 225-pound target.
  • Large catch radius: reliably extends for high throws and wins contested plays.
  • Ferocious blocker: embraces physicality and finishes blocks with authority.
  • Alignment versatility: capable of lining up inline, flexed out, or in motion as an H-back.

His blocking alone gives him a chance for early playing time, but his ability to threaten the seam and create mismatches adds an exciting layer to Texas’ future offense.

Defensive Evaluation: Violence, Motor, and Hybrid Ability

Though Texas is bringing him in primarily as a tight end, Jilek’s play on defense helps define his identity as a football player: violent, fast, and fearless.

Defensive Strengths:

  • Plays with urgency: arrives at the ball with bad intentions.
  • Hybrid linebacker/edge ability: can stack the box or rush off the edge.
  • Great use of length: extends to shed blocks and disrupt plays.
  • High football IQ: diagnoses plays quickly and takes efficient angles.

That defensive mentality translates directly into his offensive blocking, one of the biggest reasons his ceiling at tight end is so high.

Why Texas Won This Battle

Texas has prioritized tight end recruiting under Steve Sarkisian, seeking players who can be both dominant run blockers and matchup problems in the passing game. Jilek fits that mold perfectly.

For the Longhorns, flipping a Big Ten commitment, especially one as physically gifted and versatile as Jilek,  signals a continued investment in building depth and competition at the position.

Early Impact Potential

Because of his frame, strength, and blocking skill, Jilek could push for early snaps once he gets to Austin. Tight end is one of the most difficult positions to transition into at the college level, but Jilek’s physicality and readiness give him a head start.

Add in his athletic profile and defensive background, and it becomes clear:

Texas didn’t just land a tight end,  they added a multi-positional athlete with the upside to become a long-term difference-maker.
