As anticipation builds for one of college football’s most iconic rivalries, the Texas Longhorns and No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners are set to renew hostilities on Saturday, October 11 in the annual Red River Showdown. First played in 1900, this fierce battle has become a defining tradition in the sport, with decades of unforgettable moments and championship implications. Held at the legendary Cotton Bowl in Dallas during the Texas State Fair, the game splits fans down the middle and delivers unmatched intensity. Last year, the Longhorns dominated the Sooners in a 34–3 blowout, showcasing a stifling defense and efficient offense led by Quinn Ewers in what was their first meeting as SEC members. With Oklahoma seeking revenge and Texas looking to bounce back from recent struggles, this year’s matchup promises to be another dramatic chapter.

This game typically brings the unexpected, and we expect this year to be no different. Will quarterback John Mateer play for the Sooners, despite a recent thumb surgery? Will Texas fix their offensive woes? Who wins this game and why? Our staff gives their thoughts on these questions, and more.

Jameson McCausland (3-2)

I am going to assume that John Mateer is starting based on the weird mind games Brent Venables has been playing this week. Regardless of who is at QB, the Texas defense does have some advantages in this game. The Oklahoma OL and skill position talent is a far cry from Florida.

For Texas offensively, it is a scary thought that the OL that just got manhandled has to now face one of the top defensive lines in the country. Texas is going to have to run Arch in this game. A lot.

Florida came out swinging with their backs against the wall last week, and I would hope Texas comes out with similar intensity this week in what is a season-defining game. If they do, I think the Longhorns can pull it off.

Score Prediction: Texas 24, Oklahoma 21

Aaron Carrara (3-2)

Prior to the Florida game I thought Texas was a lot better than they showed on the field through four games. After the loss in Gainesville, that tune changed. The Longhorns have significant issues on the offensive line and until they get that sorted out, this could be a long season for Sarkisian and the team. Believe it or not, Arch Manning and Texas rank better than the Oklahoma offense statistically. The problem for Texas is they will be facing the top-ranked defensive unit in the country. Florida was good, but Oklahoma is lethal on defense, giving up less than 200 yards per game. Manning will be running a lot in this contest, and if he can get some help from the offensive line and his running backs, Texas has a chance. Sarkisian said this week that the intensity of the team was noticeable. The Longhorns will need it because leaving the Cotton Bowl with a win this year is going to be a tall task. As mentioned above, this game typically brings the unexpected onto the field. All it takes is a turnover at an opportune time, a fourth down stop, or a last second field goal to change the game’s outcome. And a little bit of luck, which Texas will need on Saturday.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma 27, Texas 24

Marc Henry (3-2)

The Longhorns are reeling after a tough 29–21 road loss to Florida in The Swamp. To get back on track against OU, Texas has to reestablish its identity up front.

The running game must get going, and the offensive line has to set the tone early and control the line of scrimmage. Defensively, Texas can’t afford to give up big plays, containing Mateer and the Sooners’ ground attack will be critical.

Generating consistent pressure on the quarterback will be another key, as the Longhorns look to build on a defense that’s allowing just 12 points per game this season.

Texas has to come out dominant, play physical, and set the tempo from the opening snap if they want to reclaim momentum heading into the heart of conference play.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma 27, Texas 21

Devon Messinger (3-2)

After a more-than-disappointing performance on the road against Florida, the Longhorns will look to bounce back in this year’s Red River Rivalry.

The problem? This Oklahoma team boasts a stellar defense paired with a steady, efficient offense. If Sooners QB John Mateer is cleared to play on Saturday, the Longhorns will have their hands full defensively – especially after allowing Florida QB DJ Lagway to have a field day in Gainesville.

With an offense that has sputtered through the first five games, it’s hard to foresee any major changes coming against the nation’s second-best defensive unit. But you never know… that’s the beauty of Oklahoma-Texas.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma 24, Texas 17

Jacob Campos (3-2)

It’s rare to head into a game with the Sooners and not think, “anything is possible.” However, the thought of this Texas team winning feels, well… impossible. A poor offensive line, no run game outside of QB1, and a D-line performance that has raised a few questions have Longhorn Nation feeling far from alright, alright, alright.

The thought of Brent Venables and Mateer being the nail in the coffin of a season once destined for a CFP run is one that no Texas fan saw coming. However, when Oklahoma wins 21-13 this Saturday, it will likely become reality. Hold those horns high, be loud, wear burnt orange, and hope for an all-timer from the Horns.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma 21, Texas 13

Mitch Lovell (3-2)

After a lackluster performance against Florida, Texas finds itself with no room for error for the rest of the season. Look for a team motivated to prove that last Saturday was a one-off. The Texas defense had their worst performance in a few years and the offensive line looked as bad as it has since losing to Arkansas in 2021. Oklahoma will be plenty motivated after losing last year 34-3, but with John Mateer’s status up in the air, look for the Longhorns to win a low scoring game. Should Mateer play, he will be limited and getting Malik Muhammed back for Texas is huge in the secondary.

Score Prediction: Texas 21, Oklahoma 17
