Longhorns Recruiting Road Trip: Dripping Springs vs Del Valle

Week 10:

On Friday, I traveled to Del Valle High School to watch the Cardinals take on the Dripping Springs Tigers. Although former Dripping Springs quarterback Austin Novosad graduated last fall, the Tigers have continued to roll this season, with their only two losses of the year coming to top-five ranked Vandegrift and Westlake. Currently, it is safe to say that Dripping Springs has certainly slithered their way to becoming the Austin area’s third-best team, following a win against Lake Travis in October.

While I made my way out to Del Valle expecting a high-scoring game from the Dripping Springs offense, I instead got a high-scoring game from the Tigers defense. In fact, the Tigers defense scored two pick-six touchdowns in the first half, and set up their own offense with another opportunity off of a forced fumble. After a scoreless first quarter, Dripping Springs led Del Valle 28-0 at the half despite of the sluggish start for the offense.

Junior quarterback Maddox Maher was one of the key reasons I wanted to see Dripping Springs before the end of the regular season. However, junior running back Jack Tyndall was the one who stole the show in the first half with a major 83-yard touchdown run. Otherwise, while the offense was not firing on all cylinders, it was good to see that the Tigers are versatile in nature and can win games with their defense. Eventually, Dripping Springs left the field with a 52-3 win over Del Valle.

Boy am I excited for the Texas high school football playoffs. If I am being honest, the day after the finale of the regular season is the equivalent to my football version of Christmas. This Saturday, November 4th, we should know all of the state’s playoff matchups for the UIL bi-district opening round of the playoffs. Of course, there are a good deal of Longhorns commits that will be playing and I hope to see as many of them as I can.

In terms of Dripping Springs, I have hope that they will be able to go a couple of rounds in the playoffs. This year’s 6A Classification is very top-heavy, with Duncanville, North Shore, DeSoto, Vandegrift and Westlake all in the driver’s seat. However, this year has been unpredictable and we will see where play ends up in December.
