Shortstop Jalin Flores hit a decisive grand slam in the ninth inning, leading No. 1 Texas to a thrilling 14-11 victory over Texas State on Tuesday evening at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos.
The Longhorns (34-5) overcame two deficits, trailing the Bobcats (19-21) by as many as five runs in their biggest comeback win of the season.
Texas scored 10 runs in the final three innings, securing their 16th comeback win in spectacular fashion.
Flores’ 10th home run of the season was also the Longhorns’ first grand slam of the year and the fifth of his career.
His 424-foot shot to center field tied him for seventh-most career home runs (32) by a Texas player, matching Danny Peoples (1994-96).
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound slugger had a season-high five RBI, helping erase both a 4-0 and a 9-4 deficit.
Third baseman Casey Borba had a career night, hitting a three-run home run and finishing with a career-best five RBI.
Catcher Rylan Galvan added to the home run tally with a two-run blast, bringing the Longhorns within one run in the eighth inning.
After Flores’ grand slam, right-hander Thomas Burns (3) struck out the side to secure Texas’ sixth consecutive win.
Righty Cody Howard (1-0) earned the victory, retiring four of the five batters he faced.
Next, the Longhorns will host in-state rival Texas A&M at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, with the three-game series starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.
