Texas survived a College Football Playoff Quarterfinal game against Arizona State in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, earning a berth in the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Quinn Ewers’ 25-yard touchdown pass to Gunnar Helm followed by a successful 2-point conversion in double overtime gave the Longhorns their first lead of the game since the 5:00 mark in the 4th quarter. The 39-31 victory was sealed thanks to Andrew Mukuba’s interception of quarterback Sam Leavitt at the Texas three-yard line on the Sun Devils’ next possession.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers finished the game with 322 yards passing and three touchdowns. Matthew Golden led the receiving corps with 7 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.
The Longhorns moved to 2-0 all time versus Arizona State and will face Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Semifinal in Arlington on January 10.
Texas and Ohio State have met three times before with the Longhorns holding a 2-1 all-time advantage. The last meeting took place in the Fiesta Bowl (2009) and saw the Longhorns leave Glendale with a 24-21 victory.
Should Texas defeat the Buckeyes they will play for their first national championship since the 2009 season.
