The Texas Longhorns (5-3, 4-3) own a three-game winning streak against the Kansas State Wildcats (4-5, 4-4), but Saturday’s game in Manhattan, Kansas could prove to be a challenge regardless of Texas being favored by seven points.
Why?
The Longhorns have historically had trouble winning in the Little Apple. Sam Ehlinger threw for 207 yards and one touchdown and Texas squeaked out a 19-14 win in 2018. Other than that, the last time Texas won in Manhattan was 2002. Before that? 1926.
While the Longhorns have had their share of struggles in an otherwise disappointing season, Kansas State has lost their last four games. The Wildcats lost starting quarterback Skylar Thompson for the season due to an injury suffered in Kansas State’s 31-21 win over Texas Tech on October 3rd. Freshman quarterback Will Howard took the reins and won his first two starts but has struggled since.
The Longhorns will be missing several key players at kickoff as well. Safety Caden Sterns and offensive lineman Sam Cosmi announced their decisions to opt out of the remainder of the season in preparation for the NFL Draft. Center Derek Kerstetter is nursing an injury and may not play against the Wildcats.
True freshman running back Deuce Vaughn leads Kansas State in rushing and receiving yards, and is the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both categories.
