As it turns out, losing to TCU on Saturday may not have been the worst thing to happen to Texas football this week. One of the best players in the country and a prized jewel in the Texas 2021 recruiting class, Billy Bowman Jr., has decided to decommit from the Longhorns.

The news comes as a surprise as Bowman has been committed to Texas since before his junior season, in the summer of 2019. The 5’10 athlete from powerhouse program Denton Ryan is a four-star prospect via the 247Sports Composite. He’s ranked as the third-best athlete in the 2021 class, the sixth-best player overall in the state of Texas, and the 33rd ranked player overall in the country.

Bowman and star teammate Ja’Tavion Sanders were both the highest-rated commits in Texas’s 2021 class. Bowman’s de-commitment drops Texas from the 15th ranked class to the 17th via 247Sports.

Bowman has been a star on the field ever since he started playing varsity as a freshman. In 2017, he was a second-team All-District selection at wide receiver. As a sophomore, he was a first-team All-State selection at cornerback, and as a junior, he helped Denton Ryan get over the hump and reach the 5A D1 state championship game. They fell short against an incredible Shadow Creek team, but this year with the Sharks moving to 6A, Ryan is the team to beat in 5A D1.

In his high school career, Bowman has hauled in 151 receptions for 1,829 yards and 31 touchdowns as a wide receiver. He’s also racked up 85 tackles with 10 passes defended, three forced fumbles, eight interceptions, and six pick-sixes.

Bowman is a special talent and his decommitment is a tremendous loss for the Longhorns. He’s a rare player who can literally do anything on the field. Bowman still has offers on the table from elite programs such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma among others.

The favorite for his Bowman’s services is likely the Oklahoma Sooners.
