Last Friday, I covered Austin LBJ’s game against San Antonio Cornerstone Christian. This season, Austin LBJ is led by two four-star recruits in Latrell McCutchin (Oklahoma commit) and Andrew Mukuba. Tonight at 7 P.M. (CT), Mukuba will announce his college commitment and the Longhorns are one of his finalists.
Week Four:
In preparation for Mukuba’s commitment, I planned on covering his game against Cornerstone Christian. In addition, I was excited to see how the versatile safety would perform against one of the better teams in the state. Last season, Mukuba actually led the Jaguars in receiving yards, along with being the star of the defense.
One thing that stood out about Andrew Mukuba and Latrell McCutchin was their fearlessness when attacking the ball. In fact, McCutchin was able to force a fumble after delivering a hard hit on the ball carrier. Furthermore, Mukuba’s hands were on full display as he ended the game with a receiving touchdown and had caught an interception that was later negated by a penalty. This season, Mukuba and McCutchin will look to lead the Jaguars to a state title in Texas’s 4A Division I classification.
You would be hard pressed to find a high school with a better duo in their secondary. In addition, if Texas loses the Mukuba sweepstakes, they will have missed out on two great defensive backs who could be found in Texas’s backyard. However, if Texas lands Mukuba, Longhorns defensive coordinator, Chris Ash, would be getting a very talented player who he could develop further.
Yesterday, the Longhorns extended an offer to four-star 2022 running back, Jemarion Miller. Currently, Texas joins ten other schools in the battle for the running back from Tyler, TX.
Lastly, 2021 Longhorns commits, Ja’Tavion Sanders and Billy Bowman Jr., certainly made their presence felt in their season opening game against Arlington Martin at AT&T Stadium last Friday. In particular, Ja’Tavion Sanders had some grown man type of moments, while Bowman was also a major contributor for Ryan as well. After the final whistle, Ryan beat Martin, 47-24.
This Friday, Denton Ryan will face crosstown rival, Denton Guyer, in a battle of two of the state’s top teams. Currently, Ryan is the top ranked team in the 5A Division I classification, while Guyer is ranked fifth in the 6A classification.
