Jalen Milroe Decommits from Texas, Switches to Alabama

Every action comes with a reaction. With the commitment of 2022 QB Quinn Ewers came the decommitment of 2021 quarterback Jalen Milroe. Texas looked to be the favorites for the Brockermeyer twins earlier but ended up losing out to Alabama. Now, the Crimson Tide flipped Milroe too.

Milroe committed to Texas on July 21, 2019, just one month after Texas originally offered him. It appeared as if Texas had its signal-caller for the future. The dual-threat from Tompkins stood 6’2 195-pounds and was the 82nd ranked prospect in the nation for the class of 2021. The four-star prospect via the 247Sports Composite is also the fourth-ranked dual-threat in that class in the nation and the tenth-ranked player in Texas overall.

With the decommitment, Texas now drops to just 16 hard commits for the class of 2021. A once top-ten class is now just outside that as Texas holds the 14th ranked class nationally via 247Sports. Alabama, with the addition of Milroe, has 19 hard commits and thus the second-ranked class.

Nick Saban now has four commits from the state of Texas. The Brockermeyer brothers, Milroe, and Duncanville linebacker Kendrick Blackshire.

So what’s next for Texas at the quarterback position?

By the time 2021 rolls around Texas will still have a healthy variety of options at quarterback. As our Devon Messinger wrote earlier, Texas will have redshirt junior Casey Thompson, along with sophomores Hudson Card and Ja’quinden Jackson. In 2022, the Longhorns will be granted the services of Quinn Ewers as well.

Texas ultimately should be good in the long run. But, if they would like to look at other quarterback options there are a few names still out there.

Frisco Independence three-star dual-threat Braylon Braxton is still on the board. For the 10-3 Independence Knights, Braxton completed 61% of his passes for 3,236 yards and 45 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He also ran for 849 more yards and 11 touchdowns.

Another option is Elite 11 finalist and Camp Bullitt quarterback MVP, Grayson James. The 6’1 200-pound signal-caller is also a three-star quarterback via the 247Sports Composite. James is a pro-style quarterback who last year for John Paul II threw for 3,878 yards and 42 touchdowns to just seven interceptions on 63.5% completion.

Regardless of what the Longhorns decide to do, the Milroe decommitment opens up a spot on the 2021 class to bolster the roster at either the quarterback position or in another area.
