Texas Longhorns Recruiting

Talking Texas with 2021 OL target Savion Byrd

When it comes to highly recruited players in the Class of 2021, very few have the argument for being more highly-touted than Duncanville offensive lineman Savion Byrd.

Byrd, a five-star junior for the defending 6A Division I runner-ups, is being heavily pursued by Texas, among other schools such as LSU, Alabama, SMU, and Auburn.

“Coach Herman has been showing me love and talking to me,” Byrd said after Duncanville’s 35-14 win over nationally-ranked St. John’s College Prep (DC) on Saturday. “Also, Coach [James] Cregg from LSU has been talking to me.”

With LSU being a heavy pursuant of Byrd, his September 7th visit to Austin for the LSU game was a perfect opportunity to evaluate both schools.

“I was there evaluating both colleges. I saw how the Texas crowd reacted, it was really crazy.”

Despite the loss to LSU, when it pertained to the Longhorns from his visit, Byrd spoke highly of the program and how it fits with what he is looking for.

“It’s home and all of the coaches treat me like family.”

Speaking of people that feel like family to the five-star, it just so happens that his quarterback and friend that he is protecting on Friday nights is already committed to the Longhorns, four-star 2020 athlete Ja’Quinden Jackson.

When asked about if Jackson has talked up Texas to him, Byrd laughingly responded with: “I mean he is my quarterback.”

A positive note for Texas in Byrd’s recruitment is that he is aware of the Longhorns’ ability to bring in and develop solid offensive linemen.

“I have been thinking about it really hard. Ever since I started getting my offers and blowing up, I haven’t stopped thinking about it.”

With Texas heavily in the picture for Byrd, he said he has a date in mind for when he will make his decision and that time just needs to fly by.

“I just have to take it one step at a time because I am still young and have time. I’m trying to see how they act, I want to see the environment, I want to see who my teammates would be. I just have to make sure I’m comfortable and that I’m home.”
