Pro Day 2019 Recap and Notable Performances

The Texas Longhorns hosted NFL scouts Wednesday afternoon for their annual Pro Day. Breckyn Hager, Calvin Anderson, Charles Omenihu, and Patrick Vahe were among the former Longhorns with notable performances that may boost their draft stock.

Sixteen NFL teams were in attendance Wednesday afternoon to see former Texas Longhorns perform one last time in Austin. Scouts flew in from the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The first to showcase his strength to the NFL representatives, was Calvin Anderson. The former Longhorn offensive lineman put up 30 reps of 225 on the bench press. Quite a solid showing considering only five offensive lineman who were tested at the combine, bested Anderson’s number.

Fellow offensive lineman Patrick Vahe matched Anderson’s reps with 30 of his own. Longhorns’ strength and conditioning coach Yancy McKnight who is entering his third year in the role, is definitely boasting an impressive regime.

Iosua Opeta (Weber State), Garrett Bradury (NC State), Phil Haynes (Wake Forest), Yodny Cajuste (West Virginia), and Hjalte Froholdt (Arkansas), are the only combine lineman with better bench scores than Anderson and Vahe.

Former Texas defensive lineman Charles Omenihu improved his three-cone drill time from his combine recording of 7.48 seconds, to 7.23 seconds per Joe Cook of InsideTexas.com. Omenihu is projected to go in the top 50 of the draft and is the darling of many a scout due to his 36 inch arms and smart use of hands.

Breckyn Hager who tested with the linebackers during Pro Day, also had an impressive showing per Chip Brown of Horns247. Hager recorded a 39.5 inch vertical, which if official, would tie for second in linebackers tested at the combine. The former Texas captain is projected to go in the late rounds or undrafted.

Additional Pro Day notes:

  • Former Texas and now SMU quarterback Shane Buechele threw to his former teammates during Wednesday’s Pro Day.
  • Former Longhorns’ defensive back John Bonney who transferred to Texas Tech as a graduate transfer in 2018, participated in Texas’ Pro Day.
  • Former Longhorns’ offensive tackle Tristan Nickelson was back in Austin to participate in Pro Day. Nickelson went undrafted in 2018 but was extended a rookie camp invitation by the Buccaneers.
  • Former Longhorns’ wide receiver/running back Daje Johnson, who was briefly with the Falcons in 2016, also participated in Wednesday’s Pro Day.
