The Texas Longhorns (12-2, 7-1 SEC) and Arizona State Sun Devils (11-2, 7-2 Big 12) will face off for just the second time in history when they meet in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff on Wednesday. The game, hosted by the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, marks the second time this season that Texas will have played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. They hope to have a more favorable outcome this time, after falling 22-19 in overtime to the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game.
These two teams took different paths to the quarterfinals. The Longhorns were forced to play a first-round game against the Clemson Tigers, following their loss in the SEC Championship Game. Texas defeated Clemson 38-24 behind a 292-yard rushing attack, thanks to Quentrevion Wisner and Jaydon Blue, to advance to Atlanta. Arizona State received an automatic first-round bye and overall four seed in the playoff after defeating Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game.
For Texas fans, it very much feels like there is more football to be played this season. For Arizona State fans, it feels like a cinderella story, after the Sun Devils were picked to finish dead last in their first season in a new conference.
Wednesday brings high stakes football for both programs that hope to continue the dream of potentially playing for a national championship.
