Why all the smokescreens at this point in the game

Just a question. Here it is jan.1 ,2014 and all you are hearing is names being thrown out like UT has no idea at this stage of the game where we are at on our next coach. I understand that a coach needs to be veted.I feel we should basically know that coaches 1-2-or 3 is not only interested but we have a good feel they will accept the position if asked. We are basically dealing with 1 agent who handles most of the coaches we are looking at. Duh....Either they are interested or we move on. Patterson does not seem to be an AD that hasn't at this point made up his mind who that coach is going to be. So...why the continuing smokescreens. don't see why they are needed.

i'm not so sure any of this is smokescreen. I mean, it's possible that all of these people we've heard about have been contacted and/or interviewed.

Also, maybe if there really are smokescreens it's because our next coach hasn't played his final game yet?

...we were all forewarned that this would indeed take place. now let's just relax... and await our saviour.

Smoke screen with names for protection of coaches not named because of their whereabouts.

"Smoke screens" are for amateurs and pathetic "media" individuals who are trying to drum up traffic. Right now OB and Bohls are either wittingly or witlessly collaborating to make the UT coach search look bush league. If Patterson is a responsible professional, he has no reason to engage in diversions of any kind. He just needs to do his job with a small group of reliable confidants and project professionalism to prospective candidates. If he is behind any of the nonsense on OB or Bohls, UT made a HUGE mistake hiring Patterson.

My fear is that all this misdirection is the creation of the fan base and those who write about it. I remember a year or two ago when we were in the midst of realignment talks and everyday brought new rumors, innuendo and possible outcomes. I also remember the vast number of folks believed that Dodds and Co, held all the cards and would steer our ship to the best possible ports.

Well, needless to say, that did not go as well as we imagined. Our primary in state rival created massive momentum and we barely escaped Ames with a win.

I understand that these are two entirely different scenarios and even two different sets of captains steering the ship, but I was extremely disappointed in how realignment turned out and my disappointment radar is up, working and starting to buzz.

I hope I am wrong, but fear I may not be.

No matter what, I still love my Horns!

Well, when the previous employee is threatening a lawsuit alleging his state job was tampered with...

A complete job search including a committee vetting multiple candidates and the hiring manager interviewing several pretty much eliminates that claim.

I vote the term "smokescreen" should be retired after this coaching search, regardless of whether they are actually being used.

This. The smokescreens are for SABAN only. They are out there because he hasn't said no yet and won't give an answer until after his bowl game.

Because we're a holding pattern at the moment and we don't need this to blow up in the media. The smokescreens and rabbit chases keep folks occupied.

I was able to speak with my source a few minutes ago. Nothing new really to report as we're just waiting for an answer. But he did acknowledge the smoke you're all seeing and said to tell you all that the fact that you're not seeing Saban's name in all that means we're still in this with him.

Why? It's working. The entities you cite are playing in another ballpark and not taking up Patterson's time trying to manage a new, out of control situation.

I think what Patterson is doing is actually contacting a large number of people, going further with some more than others, and probably letting some of it slip out as to keep the attention off of what he's trying to accomplish.

That can be done with a simple word or two placed in the right sentence, does not require a grand campaign of any kind.

If I saw Saban's name pop up on either of those "lists," I will assume he's no longer in the game and told us no.

If what you are saying is all true, Patterson is like Jon Daniels of the Texas Rangers. He keeps his business to himself. Nobody ever predicts what he will do unless it is the obvious thing. Look at the Price Fielder trade. That just appeared!!!

A professional does not need to engage in diversionary tactics. Just play his cards close to his vest. Nothing about the search should be leaked to anyone much less the press.

BS. It happens every day of every week and everywhere. Sometimes you initiate it. Sometimes you let others do it for you. You think basic negotiations don't include a little subterfuge?

Only for dishonest amateurs.

The "smokescreens" are pretty much all created by the media, bloggers and websites. Well over half the stuff floating around right now is baseless chatter cooked up by people that aren't directly connected to the search at all but it's all fun to read and keep up with.
