We all know this is going to be a "different" team for so many reasons. However sometimes in a transition year you see some of the "old" mentality sneak over to the new guard simply because you have some players were in the previous program so long and despite playing through the progressions can't entirely shake the "old" habits off. I have seen that time and time again. By how much generally based on how strong-willed then new staff is.

For me, while I don't hink we can truly answer that question, I think it is fairly safe to say we have an extremely strong willed staff whose mentality should penetrate all players to have buy in, but you never know.

So the way I look at it is, game one can tell us a lot this season even if it is against North Texas.

Over the last few year it seemed to become increasingly common to see Texas get punched in the mouth and fold. Outside of a handfule of players (both skilled and not skilled) you would see a bunch of dejected men walking the sidelines with a look that screemed "here we go again" (and I am not talking about the Whitesnake song). It just seemed that our team could never get to the position where it was leading as opposed to reacting, even when we were winning. If we were winning it was cruise control with a touch of confusion "where do we go now" type of mentality.

What I hope and honestly believe is that this part of the game is where we will see the largest improvement. I don't think Charlie Strong is the type of coach that builds a team of followers. He builds leaders, he builds a team of young men that dictate what the next steps are, win or lose.

The reason I see this is so important is that with the limits you have in college to get your "schematic advantage" down (thank you Charlie Weiss for that laugh). If you can get the team to become those that lead as opposed to those that get yanked around by the collar, you can make a quicker change in the direction of a large ship like the Texas football program.

I got so sick of not only losing over the last few years, but jst how mentaly we got beat down. Our guys were not beat down for the whole game, but all the little parts of the game it seemed that our guys were getting beat up, even by the lesser opponants. It was disgusting.

So now we get to see, what CS has been able to do. It is easy to come out and show us something at a presser or in practice, it is another thing when you have a team across the field that dream about beating the big bad, Texas Longhorns.

Although it is early and nothing can truly paint how this season will go, this could give us an idea where this prgram is going to be headed over the next few years. This is not so much about skill or scheme, it is about will. Skill and scheme can be defeated and can be broken.

What do you guys think?

Sorry for the mindless babble, just needed a place to put my thoughts out there.

Nice post HE.  As we have heard, the players went through a grueling camp and most of them were thankful just to get through it in one piece (mentally and physically).  The "will" you mentioned in your post should be more intense this year - Strong is toughening these guys up mentally.
