Though the Bulldogs came up short in a 41-14 loss to #11 Chilton, I came away impressed with what I saw from this rising junior. Austin is 6-0, 180 and is running 4.5's in the 40. Link to his Hudl, which I'm sure will only get more highlights as the year progresses. Colton Austin - Highlight Videos, Schedule & Roster - Hudl
I didn't get to see as much of Colton tonight as I wanted, as he was hobbled most of the second half from what appeared to be cramps, but what I did see was exactly what you want in a WR. Added bonus, Colton is also a great place kicker.
Austin consistently kept getting open, and worked back to his QB every single time he was in trouble. He had fluid hips, great hands, crisp route running, and already shows natural ability to work his body to make the reception. In the second quarter, Colton got the corner completely turned around and drew a nice pass interference penalty on a deep ball. Can't fault the DB for the penalty, that play would have gone 81 yards to paydirt.
Austin worked well on the outside, and had his man burned for a sure TD early in the game (QB just missed him being open). He wrote his own check on Thorndale's first scoring drive, as he broke a run to the outside from being lined up as a RB, then hauled in a 35 yard TD pass on the next play. On the reception, he took time to make sure he had the ball, then turned up and put a move on the DB to break it.
For any WR at a small school to get to the next level, they have to do all the little things right, and that includes blocking. Colton didn't have any problem with that, and laid waste to a Chilton defender in support of his scrambling QB. Did well on run blocking assignments as well.
I'll be back to see him again later in the year. If you are in the Austin area, this young man is well worth the drive to go see.
