SQUANDERED

One word to sum up a game, SQUANDERED.  You simply do not give up a 5-1 turnover margin and expect to win.   TEXAS would give up 24 points off turnovers.   This marks the 3rd game of the year the Horns lost a game it should have won.  .and in the process made another QB no one has heard of look great.  Sadly the lack of execution on both sides of the ball cost the Horns what might have been their best road performance in the CFS era . .an era which maybe on life support.  While I think CFS gets 2016 even if we lose out, it will be an uphill struggle from here.

This would also mark a chance for TEXAS to face adversity yet come back and win a game on the road.  These are the types of wins teams can build off of. . . wins that instill the confidence we had in the good years under Mack.  Call it what you wish, point the finger of blame wherever you like. . . at the end of the day.  .this TEXAS team simply does not know how to win a football game or to come from behind.  The Cheap Seats were big supporters of the Charlie Strong hire. .  . .we still want CFS to have at least 2016.  Having said that, Charlie needs to coach these guys up.  Hate to say it but this is the type of game Mack Brown coached teams won.  The man had one of the best 4th quarter come from behind records in CFB.  Well coached teams simply do not make so many execution mistakes.  We get an interception early (our only take away of the day). . . Doyle snaps the ball before anyone is ready .. now we go from a makable 3rd and 4 to 4th and 8 and punting.  Bobbled hand off between Heard and Foreman. . WVU TD . . .Kris Boyd carrying a KO return like a loaf of bread gives up a short field WVU TD. . . .Tyronne Swoopes was leading an impressive drive only to drop the ball in easy field goal range . . .holding penalty takes a TD off the board  . . .have to settle for a FG.  Opportunities squandered. . .the game was there for the taking . .not unlike Okie Lite or even Cal.

And the Cheap Seats realize that many want to blame Mack for not leaving enough . ..while a valid gripe. . . vs OSU, Cal, ISU and WVU. . . TEXAS had more than enough talent to win the game.  they were simply outcoached and out played.  .well except OSU where we were flat out ROBBED.  We were the better football team today . ..but only on paper . .. turnovers are the great equalizer.

The Cheap Seats also liked the passing attack design vs WVU . ..now we wonder where it has been but most of the play design was very good.  Easy throws for Heard for the most part.  One INT was a 4th down play and the ball was simply underthrown so no real harm, in fact pinned them at their 3 but it could have been 6 out in front of the WR.  Liked the seam routes to the TE . .still not sure why we only ran 1 play action waggle.  Other INT was a tougher in between throw that the LB dropped nicely into coverage . . .not what we need to be asking Heard to do but part of that I blame on Heard not being named the starter in Spring Drills.  And most of the running game plan was solid. . . why Gray got 14 carries is beyond me. . .our future next year at RB is STRONG (pardon the pun) with Foreman, Warren and Kirk Johnson.   Both Foreman and Warren showed they can break tackles.   I'm sorry J Gray.  .I know you have given your all to TEXAS but you are taking carries from guys who can do more.

While the turnovers (5-1) is the key stat of the day. . .the tale of the tape shows that TEXAS was 9-18 on 3rd down vs an excellent 3rd down D. . . outgained WVU by 60 yards . .would say we outplayed them too .. . if not for squandering the game with turnovers and execution errors.  In an 18 point margin of victory, WVU would score 24 points off turnovers . .. SQUANDERED

Perhaps it is old expectations . . . while the D played OK and certainly did not lose the game, they did nothing to win it either.  Outside of a very nice and at a critical time with the game still within reach 3 and out from the TEXAS 3 . . .our D  failed to bow up on the other 3 WVU turnovers and gave up 17 points . .. I don't blame them for the fumble return for 6.  They would also give up 5 yards per play rushing to WVU and a 165 yard day to Wendall Smallwood.  We still miss or fail to make too many tackles.  No better example than Jason Hall trying to body slam the WVU QB only to have him keep his balance and run for another 4 yards. . . make the flacking tackle stop trying to get on ESPN.   Still, this loss is on the O and on poor execution.

So what does this loss mean?

Charlie Strong is now 10-13 at TEXAS.  He could finish 13-13 but more likely today we see 11-12.  We do see an improved team in 2016.  Heard is better simply from more experience and practice.  The OL should be better with another year to work together.  Perkins hopefully moves inside to replace Flowers full time and Nickelson takes the RT spot  We seem to have found a real TE in Calib Bluitt.  There is talent at WR.  On the other side of the ball, no losses in the back 7 that are a concern though losing Tank along the DL is going to hurt. . . and we hope that Ridgeway does not jump to the show.  Jenkins will certainly be missed but love the LB talent.  Oh yeah, schedule isn't as brutal as 2015 either.  The way we've been playing, wouldn't mind a dose of Baylor/Aggy/SEC scheduling.. . .

It hurts as now TEXAS needs to win the next 2 to go bowling.  And Baylor's offense runs the ball better than most realize.  So odds of going bowling are pretty slim which will cost CFS 15 valuable practice sessions, time Heard should have had last spring. . . yes, that is hindsight though the Cheap Seats said back then Heard needed to be the man.

Why are we talking about 2016?  Because this season is on life support, 3 blown opportunities and crapping the bed in Ames means the odds on TEXAS going bowling in 2015 are slim and none. . .and Slim was last seen more worried about stealing Mike Leo and Jeff's scotch than winning out.  We likely have blown a chance to end the season on an up note. . we have squandered the good will of whipping Stoops and the dirt burglers and we'll likely miss out on MUCH needed practice time.  This team is NOT in a good place today.

Will post the Cheap Seats playoff teams (if we had a vote) and BigXII rankings tomorrow. . .

I like to read your take every week echeese. I agree 100%. We just don't seem to be making any improvement or seem very well coach. Thanks and keep 'em coming

Can't disagree with any of your points and yes, I too think Heard should have received more reps in the spring and been our starter from day 1 this year. I'm not giving up on Heard, I think he's a star in the making and will shine before his days at Texas are over.

Your first point says it all.  Lose the turnover battle 5-1, and you aren't going to win many games.  And to be quite honest, turnovers are 100% on the players, not the head coach or coordinator.  To put the turnovers in perspective, I believe that Texas had lost 7 turnovers in ALL of the previous games combined.  They damn-near surpassed that in 4 quarters today.

Excellent post as always Chuck. The only thing I would add is to be even more harsh than you were, and it is a cruel harsh reality of any sport, bad teams lose games. BAD TEAMS LOSE GAMES, and this is a bad team. Historically bad as it is the first time in 77 years a Texas Longhorn team has been 0-4 on the road in a season.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Strong, or even Bedford for that matter. Because, just like really good involved parents sometimes turn out bad apple children, there is no amount of coaching up possible to change the current abilities of this team.

Now, having said this, if there isn't a 9 win team in Austin next year, then I think you blow it up and start over again.

Where we are now and how we have looked getting here, I just don't see how 9 wins next year is realistic. I know the schedule is easier and most of our players will be a year older, but we aren't even competitive right now. Nobody is worried about Texas anymore.

If UT has a chance to sign the UH Coach this off season, then they need to do so.
I know a lot of people mention Herman, but I wonder if he would be the best fit. I know he has done well at Houston, but that is a very small sample size. That QB he has is really good and they don't play the best competition. Let's take a look:

Saban- yea right been down that road

Urban Meyers- can't get

Briles- don't know if he would come. Would we want?

Patterson- could get

Dabo- probably wouldn't come

Mora- would he come. Close when we got Strong

Jimbo- could we get? Would we want?

David Shaw- could we get?

Sumlin- could we get? Would we want?

John Harbaugh- would he come? How would he be in college?

Gundy- could we get? Would we want?

Pete Carroll- getting older, would we want?

Who else? Flame away

I am torn about bringing Charlie back for a third year or not. And my deep concern is that if Charlie were going to be a great head coach I would not be torn after almost 2 full years.

I think Strong needs another year if only for the fact his best players are freshmen.  As long as we have players like Doyle and Flowers on the OL this unit will only be as good as the weakest links.  Thank god for graduation.

That being said if we get more of the same next year then we wasted another year and might lose out on Herman to someone else.

Texas was the better team but as it has been said bad teams find a way to lose.  We are good at that.

^^ THIS

I just threw out some names. He recruits good and has made them better in a tough conference. I don't expect someone come in and we all of a sudden win all ours games. I just want someone to come in and beat the teams they are supposed too and show a well coached team and progress.

Everybody says Herman and maybe he is it, but WE CANT KEEP GETTING THIS WRONG. It takes to long to dig out of these holes

Coyote

Just pulling your chain. He recruits well versus the star system but we've seen that before not work out. And I don't think he coaches worth a shit.

And now he has the stench of aggy.

Before the UH vs Memphis game, they showed Herman kissing his starters on the cheek as they entered the stadium/locker room and he hugs the rest per his tradition.

Didn't we just fire a guy for coddling his players?

He is getting a lot of guys that we want regardless of what star they are. I would damn sure hate to play their ass right now......them or Arkansas. He probably wouldn't be my choice for next coach, but I want people to think past Herman. Nothing at all against Herman, we have been down for a long time. We absolutely would have to get another coaching hire right.....if there was one. Can't take chances......it has to be right

I wouldn't mind playing them at all. It would be a battle between two incompetent teams. Flip of the coin. And stumblin has had four years.

I should have put Malzahn on there too

What names am I missing? Help me here

I can't help you. I have removed myself from the nominating committee. I thought Strong was a surefire hire. 😩
