It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
The real measure of a coach and a team is how they handle adversity. . .TEXAS certainly answered the bell tonight. They played with great heart. Make no mistake, I was worried about how the team would react. They came out and played much better than last week. I'll say it again, BYU would beat UCLA right now, even had Hundley stayed upright. And Hundley is good. When he went down, TEXAS should have won. But sadly, we just aren't that good.
This was a game that featured 2 Offensive lines that are struggling. The difference in the game came down to their OL being better than our OL. And honestly, their D is better than ours. They cover better, they make tackles, they don't allow YAC or yards after contact.
Game was there for us to win. . we don't know how to win. . .at least not yet.
UCLA's OL was surprisingly effective. They would gain 226 yards on the ground and 443 overall.
Another positive, Tyrone Swoopes is a much better QB than I thought he'd be, at times fearless with his passes. He likes the slant play, he hit Marcus Johnson with one that was a sight to behold. And the TEXAS offense did a much better job of gaining yards on 1st down. . . still, only 5-14 on 3rd down conversions. . .1st half offense much better than the 2nd. 1st half saw 3 drives of 8, 10 and 14 plays, 2 of them lead to scores. 2nd half opened with 4 drives of 5 plays or less, not good. You gotta help your D out better than that. And players have to step up and make plays to help out teammates.
UCLA opened the 2nd half with a 7 play 75 yard drive for a TD.
TEXAS came alive, 10 play TD drive capped with a great catch by John Harris. UCLA drives but Steve Edmond with a great strip and Paul Boyette with the recovery. 4:17 to go, a good drive and the game is likely done. Instead, 3 and out. Will Russ, who was the unsung player of the game for the 2nd week, with another great punt but this time UCLA returns for 45 yards and flips the field.
Duke Thomas bites hard on a pump fake and chases the UCLA WR into the endzone for what turned out to be the game winner. Still, there is 3 minutes to go, plenty of time in CFB to move the ball. Plenty of time for TEXAS to present CFS his first quality win and on a National stage. What happens? John Harris with a big drop negating 9 yard 1st down gain. Short swing pass to ship, 3rd and 7 .. . Swoopes sacked. . .4th and too many, Swoopes with his worst pass of the game. . no idea who he was throwing it too though no one was open.
This was one that got away. This was a winnable game. . .Yes proud of the team answering the bell but despite some who prefer aggie points and entertainment, Football is about winning and losing. We should be 2-1 right now but we aren't. Our D isn't as good as we thought. Malcom Brown on either side is better than we thought. DT MB is having an AA type year. The man is DISRUPTIVE.
Many will bitch about Watson, reality, the offensive game plan was there. We just are not making enough plays. And Swoopes is turning into a pretty good QB but our OL is a work in progress at best. I hope Charlie sees his way clear to un-suspend our 2 best OLs. Bring them back, move Perkins back to OG and our OL looks worlds better. Either that or boot them cuz this season might get away from us quickly with Baylor and OU looming.
In summation, this team let a winnable game slip through their hands. Unlike the UCLA D, we still miss too many tackles, take bad angles and outside of Malcom Brown, lack playmakers. Guy who's absence is the most surprising is Ced Reed. Not totally absent but not having the AA type year I and many others expected.
Team has a week off before Kansas. This comes at a really good time. If we can build off UCLA, this can be the type of year many expected.
Shout outs/game balls to Will Russ who's punting was outstanding, Malcom Brown DT, continuing an AA type year, Malcom Brown RB, he really is coming into his own, John Harris though his drop late in the 4th was a killer and Tyronne Swoopes with a 2 TD performance that included a great run. Say hello to my little friend, you might know him as Jason Hall, the true freshman "announced his presence with authority"
Plays that left me shaking my head, Duke Thomas' blown coverage, Ship fair catching a punt at the 4???? Adrian Colbert with a chance to tackle Jack for a loss and force a punt, instead gets shrugged off.
Off week hits at a good time.
BigXII wrap up. . .
#1 OU. . . beat a 2nd tier Big 5 opponent on the road
#2 Baylor. . .beat a tomato can but no one else viable for #2
#3 OSU. . . beat up a decent tier 2 opponent in UTSA
#4 TCU. . . .beat up a bad Big 5 opponent in Minn and on the road.
#5 WVU. . .don't look now but their offense is pretty good.
#6 TEXAS. . . got off the mat but still work to be done
#7 ISU. . .beat B1G rival Iowa thanks to Kirk F calling TO to "ice" the kicker who missed the kick. ISU says thanks Kirk for the do over .. . and won the game
#8 KSU. . . .off week so ISU on the basis of a solid win moves ahead of them
#9 TT . . . got their butts kicked at home by Arkie. . .Arkie's first Non Conf win over a Big 5 under new coach.
#10. . .. can't rank them any lower, Kansas is dreadful, smoked by Duke.
