 . . . . . .. View from the Cheap Seats-Kansas State

Absent companions-our thoughts and prayers to the families of those killed and injured during Oklahoma State's Homecoming.

And in honor of those 220 Marines/241 Americans who gave their last full measure of devotion 32 years and 1 day ago in Beirut. Including my friend 1st Lt Don "Wooly Bear" Woollett.

18 Wheeler

Two ways we could go with a one word or short phrase to describe the game. The other would be defense but for today. . . . let's honor a young man who choose to continue to be a great teammate and not let personal adversity keep him from being an important contributor this year. The 18 Wheeler package would lead to all 3 of TEXAS' touchdowns vs an outmanned KSU squad. Playing in monsoon like conditions, who controlled the LOS and who was able to run the ball determined who was going to win.

With the exception of a poor pass to an open Beck, Swoopes delivered in a big way. He would cap off the game running like a Mack truck over a worn out KSU D to apply the coup de gras TD finally putting the game out of reach with with TEXAS' only 2nd half points.

A tale of 2 Halves

The Horns came out with a game plan of run. . . run. . . .run some more. . . run again. . .hey that looked good let's stick to the run. . . .run. . . . .well you get the picture. And it worked VERY WELL. Horns scored on 3 of their 4 offensive possessions of the 1st half which included drives of 15 plays, 13 plays and 8 plays (80 yard TD drive). Jerrod Heard would only attempt one legitimate pass (the pitches on the jet sweeps are considered passes) in the 1st half. Control the clock, wear out the KSU D, take a 3 score lead in the 1st half and avoid turnovers. All of that looked good until one of 2 bad special teams snaps costing TEXAS an PAT. TEXAS' D would render the issue moot by stifling KSU's 2 point play attempt to bring the game within 1 score right before half. But 3 of 4 scoring drives along with going 4 of 6 on 3rd downs saw the Horns dominate the 1st half. TEXAS would also recover a short kickoff to give themselves a chance to blow the game out early but a holding penalty put TEXAS too far behind the chains.

The second half . .. . ..well not so much. Despite being almost complete outmanned compared to TEXAS, Bill Snyder showed why he is one of the best game day coaches in the nation. After such a strong showing in the 1st half, KSU made defensive adjustments and forced TEXAS to punt on their first 5 possessions with only one drive going for more than 4 plays. Let me re-go on record of saying I absolutely hate the QB sweep play. After running the counter play so well vs OU, we almost completely went away from it. Needless to say, underwhelmed by the offensive 'plan' and adjustments in the 2nd half. We seem to have no short passing game at all, no waggles or sprint outs for Heard to make easy throws though his pass to Caleb Bluitt was GEORGEOUS. . . . .J Gray with his best game of the year and Chris Warren with a really nice carry. D'onte had a quiet though solid day. . . . but serious props to Daje Johnson with 6 "receptions" and if my count was right, 5 for 1st downs. Speaking of offensive props, our WRs with another great day blocking. Clearly the OL is coming together as well, Flowers and Vahe pulling is a thing of beauty to watch, frequently completely stone walling their opponents. The return of Perkins also helped the OL vs a good KSU DL (the strength of their D)

Now as much as the offense was ugly in the 2nd half, the D bent but refused to break. After giving up just one TD in the 1st half, they would hold KSU to just a FG in the 2nd. Really nice to see the front 4 getting such a consistent push. Dylan Haines had his best game of the year. 1 INT which would set up 18 Wheeler/TEXAS final TD to put a fork in the game . . .but he had a pick 6 INT hit him in the hands which he failed to secure (if he could catch, he'd be a WR) and missed another INT as well. While a good game. . . . some might say he gave up KSU's sole TD but he was picked on the play. . something I wish was called more.

After failing to handle a punt snap vs OSU, Michael Dickson has been on most fans bad list . ..well he redeemed himself today. On one of 2 poor snaps, he managed to not only secure a snap that went over his head but to get off what might have been his best punt of the day. Props to him, nice to see him make what might have been the most impressive play of the day.

What's it all mean?

TEXAS and CFS built on their OU win. They beat a KSU team that face it, is TEXAS' biggest bugaboo in the conference. Team is now 3-4 and needs to go 3-2 down the stretch to go bowling. Upcoming schedule is @ISU Kansas @WVU TT and Baylor. Really hate today we did not at least split the Cal/OSU games but it is what it is and 3-2 is very possible, heck talent wise we should go 4-1. TEXAS' D appears to be becoming a real force and clearly the OL is improving with the return of Perkins. Running game is real but who knows what we have with a passing game. The Cheap Seats is enjoying watching the young DBs growing up. . . . not going to be long before we return to DBU.

Games to be played so will come back tomorrow to pick my "Playoff 4" and rank the conference.

Good stuff cheese. Given the weather conditions I'm perfectly happy with the W and can't complain too much about mistakes.

Thanks Chuck. Nice recap.

Good job, cheese.

I had two, no, make that three, 'therapy' sessions this weekend. The first was at MDAnderson on Friday night (can't give up Saturday football, after all), which includes complementary food!

The second, and by far the best, was the Texas game. Love the fight in this team. We credit the freshmen, as we should, but the fight in this team is a reflection of Strong. This team is developing in his image, fun loving when the job is done. All work when it's game on. They will punch you in the gut, get back up, and punch you again.

The third was the total implosion of the Ags, complete with transfer rumors again, as well as rumors, that there is so much tension between Kyler and the coaching staff, that he was held out of last nights game. In addition, Kevin supposedly had words with Sumlin after last weeks game. There may be trouble in Summieland. Too bad. So sad.

Hook 'em!
