View from the Cheap Seats-Ames Nightmare

5 star culture meets 5 star players

Telling graphic shown during the game, since 2017, TEXAS has recruited 40 4 & 5 star level players. ISU has recruited 4. After last year's win in Austin, All American RB Breece Hall's quote when asked about the difference in the teams, 5 star culture vs 5 star players. Pretty hard to dispute what he said. Ames at night is never an easy place to play. First play of the game said it all, 12 yard gain by BiJian before he coughed the ball up. Have to say, SUPER proud of the D's 1st half efforts. Handed a short field they held ISU to a FG and then shut them out the rest of the half. On ISU's next 6 drives, our D would force 4 punts, a turnover on downs and recover a fumble. But football is a 60 not 30 minute game. 2nd half would see the D return to it's not playing the right gaps, missing tackles and failing to make plays self. And the REALLY bad news, the D wasn't the worst unit on the field last night. That honor goes to a completely inept offense save one great drive. Though it was really a tale of the tallest midget. This is NOT a very good football team. Keep in mind that the last 4 game losing streak occurred in 2010. . ..UGH

BiJain would crack 1000 yards on the season on a very average night for him 18 carries 90 yards 5.0 per. He was completely overshadowed by All American Breece Hall who also cracked 1000 rushing on 141 from 19 carries, 7.2 per. As bad as the loss was, BR left the game twice with injuries. Welp, the Casey Thompson era is over. He was replaced in the 1st quarter. The Cheap Seats were YUGE fans of Casey but it was the right call and it's time to see what Card can do. Sadly the Longhorns are already in "next year" mode. Get the younger players as many reps as possible, try to beat the rest of the bottom of the BigXII teams (Kansas, WVU KSU the last 2 actually solid football teams) and squeek into a bowl game. Spare us the "we shouldn't go to a bowl", this teams needs all the practice reps it can get.

It is interesting that the two teams run very similar schemes. The difference, the ISU players execute much better. Now they come with a significant level of experience. Lots of seniors on the field. And it doesn't hurt that Matt Campbell has been there for awhile creating a belief in the program. Perhaps the worst note for TEXAS' future, Sark & Company seriously out coached again.

Now to be clear, the Cheap Seats ARE NOT calling for Sark's head. The man has AT LEAST 2 more seasons to get this moving in the right direction but the first thing we need to do is stop digging and we show no signs of that in 2021. We think one of the big problems beside what is not a culture of losing, is a lack of consistency. If we were ranking staffs around the BigXII, we'd have OU, OSU, ISU, Baylor, KSU (if they ever get some talent, watch out) all ahead of TEXAS, all programs (save OU) doing more with less. OU doing more with more. No one knows what TCU or TT's staff will look like in 2022 at this point while Kansas works hard to prove they are a basketball school. The biggest plus recruiting is that legitimately there is not one roster spot secure for 2022 so we can sell playing time. OK, BiJian is safe so 21 of 22. TEXAS needs play makers. Some said we should have retained Chris Ash. Maybe but he would need to bring Joseph Ossai back or this D isn't much different. Hopefully Sark hits the portal hard to find some talented OLs to patch the weakest unit on the team. This recruiting class and off season, the most important in the last decade at TEXAS.

On offense, ISU had these amazing players called Tight Ends, and they used them in the passing game. It was amazing. Not sure why we don't use them at TEXAS cuz we know the TE room has lots of bodies

We wanted to highlight the player who delivered TEXAS sole score of the night, Xaiver Worthy. He called out his teammates this week by talking about getting everyone to play hard. True Freshman, 100% a Sark guy. This team needs leaders and nothing more powerful than peer pressure.

Player of the Game

Just one this week, Dicker the Kicker with 2 punts downed inside the 5. He was our best weapon.

Stats that matter

  • 6 TEXAS offensive yards in the 3rd quarter
  • 0 Offensive points in the 2nd half
  • 10 Of 15 drives, 10 finished 3 and out or less,
  • 207 Lowest offensive yardage output since the beatdown ND put on us

On Deck

TEXAS needs a slump buster in the WORST way and that's what we have on deck this week with the worst team in teh BigXII, Kansas. We stated before we love Casey but barring injury or blow out, he should have seen his last snap at TEXAS. Time to build the O around Card, time to give young guys experience.

Fighting Mack Brown's

UNC came into the season clearly over hyped. They were not a Top 10 quality team. And we have some fans still butt hurt about Mack Brown, several openly cheering UNC under achieving. Down 48-34 to start the 4th quarter, UNC scores 24 in the 4th to upset previously unbeaten Wake Forest in an oddly "non-conference" game. We still think Wake makes the ACC title game but no quit in Mack's Tarheels. His players play hard for him.

Ranking the BigXII

#1 OU Playoff bound

2nd tier of teams in the hunt for the final CCG spot

#2 OSU Must face OU still

#3 ISU #4 Baylor enjoys the tie breaker vs OSU. Also must face OU

#4 Baylor Has tie breaker on ISU, OU on deck

3rd tier playing for a bowl bid.

#5 KSU based on better conference record, bowl eligible

#6 TEXAS must win 2 of 3 to go bowling

#7 TCU, must win 2 of 3 to go bowling

#8 TT must win one of 3 tough games to go bowling

#9 WVU must win 2 of 3 to go bowling

#10 Kansas basketball season here

Too early play off projections

We're going to project how we think it finishes not where we are today

#1 Georgia, projecting they beat Bama to win the SEC. If Bama wins, both are in and Cincy out.

#2 1 Loss B1G winner. We think tOSU today but this will be a wild finish

#3 OU Unbeaten OU gets in over once beaten Oregon even if they win the Pac

#4 Cincy 1st group of 5 to make the playoffs as long as they finish unbeaten

Just a bit outside

Oregon needs some help. Yes they beat tOSU. They win out, they could push Cincy as they are #4 today. Keep in mind, Oregon is the ONLY ranked team in the PAC

I'll add a couple of more stats that matter.

Texas had as many first downs (11) as they had punts.

From 4:09 of the 2nd quarter to 5:41 of the third quarter, Texas had five straight 3 and outs. These 15 plays resulted in 0 yards of actual offense. However, Texas had 25 in penalties so the net result was -25 yards of offense on those 15 plays.

Good post as usual. Will disagree on Casey's getting his last snap. Belive his thum is still hurting.( on coaches starting him if injured)

Card needshis second chance but so far not an improvement.

Maybea few plays for Wright. Enough bodies atall positions exceptOL to try different players. Line up for Kansas will tell a lot.

Appears Casey was playing hurt and re-injured his thumb/hand so I disagree about Card taking over. He played bad from what I saw, missed way too many open WRs. The only silver lining about his bad play is we now wont be seeing multiple "Start Card" on every other post from a certain poster.

I gotta disagree with you the Card-Thompson thing. Thats a different game with an uninjured Thompson. I think Card solved the "what if Card went in" question.

The difference is, like Sam before him, Thompson can improvise and make things happen with his legs as well as arm. He throws well on the run.

And lets face it. With the worst OL in college football, we need a QB who can run.

Thompson is a junior. I don't agree with or understand why you would bench him just to let someone one year behind him play. Makes no sense.

We should have benched every single OL we have at various points in the season. But who would you put in there that could be better? We've tried a ton of combinations. Nothing works.

Sark needs to get himself a minimum of five OL in the portal.

QB, OL and several spots on defense need immediate help from the portal.  Not saying that will happen, just noting that the ultimate answer is not currently on campus.

A healthy Casey is a better QB than Hudson right now.  I’m not sure that’s true with even an average OL.  Casey has an amazing ability to avoid a jail break pass rush and stay cool.

There is no QB controversy. Casey's thumb is done for the year. It only got worse and it's not going to get better in 3 weeks. We have known he was compromised since half time at OU, but played him anyway.

Portal season is going to be like a K-Mart green-light sale for Sark. lol

I think that’s our best bet.
I feel good about our chances with Campbell. We might swing one other OL who is committed to Oregon at this time. Either of those could start right away. So we need a minimum of three OL in the portal.

Maybe 10 spots left so who will it be.

I missed the game. But from what I read and reviewing the stats, Texas' offense was inept. I'm of the opinion that no amount of freshman OL is going to help much. They can't compete physically with 22-23 year old DLs and LBs. So we better learn to use the portal and NIL. Otherwise, we're in for another long season next year.
