The Sporting News thinks we may pursue Braxton Miller

If Watson can't tailor our offense to best utilize what we have then we need a new offensive cordinator. If he couldn't utilize Braxton Miller then he needs to go. And if we don't recruit Braxton Miller because of Watson that is a huge failure.
Agree 100% Bear. HUGE amount of truth here. And even if we don't get Braxton Miller, if Watson can't tweak his offense to get production out of what was likely the best dual threat QB in the State of Texas in 2013...then we need to look for someone else.

Until Greg Davis made changes in his offense to take advantage of what Vince could do, we were one step forward and one step back. Once Mack let Vince and Davis get on the same page..and let Davis tailor that zone read to mesh with Vince's strengths...we were off to the races.

But having said all of the above, I think Watson is fully capable of fixing our offense and I think he'll do it.

IMO taking Miller is desperation mode, we would be rolling the dice on a kid coming off an injury, not to mention what kind of a message it sends to Heard, Swoopes, and even Gentry..Miller is not going to be the savior of the program.

TEXAS doesnt rent talent...if you cant win with the talent you recruited, then you recruited the wrong people and I dont want you leading THE Program

Swoopes a QB which was very raw out of HS and more of a project and Heard true frosh Spread QB back up. I think that qualifies as desperation mode.

I doubt Miller would pick Texas though.  Hes a Senior and Texas is rebuilding.  As much as I would like to see this happen, Oregon would probably get his services.

Well, Mack recruited the talent and he is not running the program anymore. Strong now has to make decisions for his program as he feels appropriate.

It was such a great post I felt the need to accidentally post it twice. Enjoy.

If Watson tweaked the offense, then I agree that Miller nets more wins. If they put him under center, had him take a 5-step, and then asked him to go though a 3 progression read, then I don't agree that he'd be any better than the current roster.
I'm sorry, are you serious?   Miller alone wins at least OU and UCLA this year. . . .and gives us a shot at both Baylor and KSU.

Forget the fact that we already run part of the offense out of a shot gun (but under center does make play action more effective).

Every offense using 3-5 and 7 step drops

And it's rare a QB does not have 3 4 or even 5 progressions depending on how many pass catchers they send.

If you don't think Miller wins 2-3 more games (with no other changes). . . . well . . .we'll just have to disagree . .

Its not rare in college football.  Many teams have gone to 'check with me' and 'read & go' type offenses where the sideline/OC essentially reads the defense for the QB and signals who is the primary/single receiver on each play after the defense has set.

I disagree with everything you posted. As far as desperation, every college team that has a need for a dual threat QB next year will want Miller. It's not very often that a potential Heisman Trophy candidate is available for a team for his senior year.

The message it sends to the other QBs is that you have compete. If they go on to the NFL or the business world they will have to compete, so they might as well get use to it. None of our current and future QBs have proved anything and this is for just one year.

TEXAS does rent talent. Usually for four or five years. As far as recruiting the wrong people and leading the program, I did agree with that a year ago this month.

If we don't go after Miller then we could be in for a long year next year as well. Swoopes is clearly not the answer and would benefit immensely from a redshirt year and it would allow Heard to avoid being thrown in the fire like Swoopes was this year...and we all saw how that turned out.

For the record I think we have little chance of landing Miller.  ..I think he's Oregon bound. . .

But not chasing him would be FOOLISH and short sighted . ..  .

We do not have a BigXII title contending  QB on campus in 2015 .. .that's reality . ..

With a QB like Miller, assumed improvement in OL play even if only from added experiance and plugging a few holes on D. . . .we'd have a shot, dark horse but a shot.

that's kinda where we are right now, isn't it ?

I think Watson is a great qb coach. Have heard this from more then one person who does it for a living. I however have my reservations as a coordinator. If we did get miller and he couldn't change offense enough to use his strengths, then proof would be in the pudding about him not being good coordinator. He taylored the offense, no pun intended, for Martinez. Braxton is a hell of a lot better then him. We shall see.
