The Overstreet Effect and the quarterbacks position going forward

It's about that time - yes, that time we bring the heat with respect to the Horns quarterback position. Looking forward, beyond just this year, an assessment of the players and the incoming talent is necessary. We pretty much know that Connor Brewer is going to redshirt and I believe Overstreet will see playing time this season - even if it is not at the qb position. If Ash AND McCoy split time does Jalen get thrown in the mix? I would have to think so. Swoopes is coming in and WAS tabbed as the guy to lead Texas back to the promise land (I don't buy the critics' statements that he has suddenly dropped waaay down after The Opening) but from my perspective this thing is wide open if Ash is not the clear cut guy. Overstreet has the physical size and potential to add tremendous value to the team this year and beyond. Brewer has a stronger arm than anyone on campus right now and he could claim the starter role next year. Thoughts?

Since this is a message board, I will give my "opinion" for whatever that is worth.

#1) Ash is going to be fine. We have to remember that he was a true freshman last year. A TRUE FROSH! The kid came from Belton, and maybe saw the game from the stands, but it is a completely different game once you run through that tunnel and are sitting under the eyeballs of 100K strong. Give him some time. This leads me to my second point...

2) Time. Us Texas fans have been spoiled by the wonderful plat of Colt McCoy. He came in as a redshirt freshman and lead us to a place we never dreamed of. I can't remember another freshman on the 40 Acres to do such a thing. VY came in as a sophomore. Simms played as a freshman and was also rattled at times, but people gathered around him and cheered him on. We need to do the same for Ash.

3) our running game is going to do wonders for our QBs. This is going to give them more time in the pocket than they know what to do with. This is going to boost their confidence for when they rally do need to sit in the pocket more.

4) Finally, I think Brewer redshirting will give him plenty of confidence and time to learn the playbook. Overstreet may see the field this season, but not as a threat to Ash. Don't worry about Swoopes. When he gets here, things will be in order, and he will have his place in the lineup.

We I just have to remember that not all of these top programs are running with sophomore and freshman QBs. Give these guys some time and top looking for the instant fix. We will be just fine. We are Texas, by God!

I still like Overstreet for the Wild Horn but I think they are looking for a back to run the Horn. Overstreet may end up with a player without a position.

I'm not as worried as a lot of people about the QB position. Slightly concerned based on last year, yes, but I feel better this year about it than half way through last year. Ash is going to be the man this year, regardless of what Mack just said at the B12 media days. Overstreet will see some reps more than likely. Case will be a serviceable backup, which is a lot more important than may realize (see last years season).

I'm also not too concerned over the poor reviews Swoopes is getting here recently. He still has time and a senior season to keep developing. One thing I will say about though is that I really, really wish he'd get him a QB coach to work with, and soon.

Mack indicated they are going to try Gray at the Wild Horn..Seems Swoopes did a lot better at the Elite 11..He is young and from a small school. I will say one thing about Overstreet. He did himself no favors by not enrolling early. He is so far behind he can't catch up..

Swoopes is fine... I think ESPN screwed the pooch by dropping him that much and relegating him to to "athlete" instead of "quarterback." It stirred things up for those that follow the ESPN 150 day in and day out. It does not change my opinion or outlook on the kid.

Ash is the guy and I cannot, for the life of me, understand why Mack flat out refuses to name a starter. It has serious leadership consequences on this team moving forward. It did last year and it continues to this year.

Sure he buys a little leeway with the immense talent at RB but these guys will have to use their arms and be able to read defenses to have success. Case McCoy has a far weaker arm than Ash.

I just want our guys to have the best chance at winning football games. I respect Coach Brown a lot but not naming a starting qb until game day for the second consecutive season is not wise.

I don't think Mack is a sure as some that Ash is the guy. I am not sure the guy is enrolled at UT. Hope I am wrong..

Whaddya mean?

Mack Brown basically said that Overstreet would not see playing time this year, nor would Connor Brewer in his press conference at Media Days. He said it is very unlikely the freshmen will get to play unless of injuries to David/Case.

Whaddya mean?
See if this is better?

Meaning I am not sure Mack has confidence in any of them.

Gotcha. I know it doesn't show Mack's enthusiasm for the qb if he cannot choose one over the other. Like lakeman posted in another thread, Are both qb's just not that good?

Overstreet will end up like John Chiles. He will see the field because he will learn to do alot of things well, but he wont ever start at Texas at QB

Ash is going to be fine. We have to remember that he was a true freshman last year.
I understand this line of thinking but I am still pessimistic about Ash. I have reasonable expectations for a true freshman QB but often times David couldn't make basic throws (that high school QBs should make) to open targets. He screwed up the most pedestrian reads. I am holding out hope that if he & Case stink it up again that Overstreet sees the field and not just as the Wildcat QB.

I am down with Yoda on this one. If this season goes south, this will be 2 years of using a crutch quarterback. I hold out hope but I will nor be a believer until i see him making good decisions and execution on the field. He is better than case mccoy though for sure.

Here's my opinion on Overstreet.

If you noticed in his early year highlight video his offensive line was awful. He also had ONE receiver that could catch.

Give him an offensive line and players that can catch the sky is the limit for him.

He has spent the past few years working with Sonny Detmer on mechanics and with Harsin and Applewhite working with him everyday, on paper, everything seems promising.

The coaches need to think out of the box with him. Everyone is eagerly awaiting Tyrone Swoopes (and with good cause) but I think we have a gamer on campus already with Overstreet. I would like to see what this young man has to offer instead of wasting him on defense.

I covered that game you have of him in the photo.

He only rushed for 351 yards and had 5 TDs. Kids a beast and has a good attitude to go with it.

Damn, I'm sold. Suit him up and release the hounds! Overstreet, Overstreet, Overstreet!!!!!!!!!"

Like I said, I am not sold on Gray being the Wildcat back. Sure he has skills but it takes more than skill to run a wildcat which is reading the defense and knowing when to handoff or keep it. I think Daje will be it or where DJ lines up. Overstreet needs to be redshirted but probably won't.
