A short time ago the Longhorns and Tyrone Swoopes were on top of the world. Since then, Ricky-Seals Jones has decommitted from the Longhorns and, as of Thursday, Swoopes is no longer the country’s highest-rated dual-threat quarterback prospect, at least according to ESPN.
ESPN had Texas as the #4 recruiting class of 2013 but with Swoopes downgrade and RSJ having second thoughts they have fell to #7. They were passed by USC, Florida St and Ohio St.
Swoopes was always going to be a project. He has tremendous talent but being from Class II A Whitewright, he has never faced the competition in high school. It also didn't help that he ran a 4.77/40 at the Opening and was wildly inconsistent as a passer. When he was good his team beat the top ranked team of Ricky-Seals Jones but he also threw 4 interceptions and had bad mechanics.
but...ESPN dropping him from the top rated duel-threat QB to the #10 rated Athlete is a big surprise. He went from the #22 recruit to the #100 in ESPN top 300. No one saw this coming. It led to this quote:
“The development that needs to take place at the quarterback position and in the passing game is an extensive one,†ESPN’s Tom Luginbill said in a report by Hornsnation.com’s Max Olsen. “We are not ruling out that he can play quarterback. But there’s going to be significant development that needs to take place, and it could take time.â€
Not good news for Tyrone or Texas..but..all is not lost. RSJ has still listed UT as his favorite but with recruiting trips to LSU and possibly Oregon, it is surely in doubt.
