Sam Ehlinger will likely sit out the next game against Austin Bowie Saturday night. This will be the third straight game he will have missed after tearing both MCLs in his knees in the season opener against Katy.
No problem, Westlake TB Nakia Watson rushed for four touchdowns in a 35-0 win over Pflugerville last week. Westalke is now 2-1.
Where are they now?
Tom Westerberg, the longtime Allen coach who moved south after last season, suffered his first loss as coach at Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill. Crosby beat Barbers Hill (2-1) 42-18 in the District 21-5A opener for both teams.
Barbers Hill finished 4-6 last year and hasn't been to the playoffs since 2012. Westerberg coached Allen for 12 seasons and led the Eagles to state titles in 2008, '12, '13 and '14.
Katy? Is that You?
Katy has now lost twice this season, and the Tigers' only victory was in two overtimes. Katy has played a tough early schedule, but the fact that it managed only three points in a 26-3 loss Friday to The Woodlands was pretty shocking. Katy, the defending 6A Division II champion, is subject to the ups and downs of any program, but it always seems to be a state contender.
The Tigers have played in four straight state title games, but getting to a fifth looks a lot less likely now than when Katy was voted No. 1 in the 6A state preseason rankings.
Patriotic Stand
L.D. Bell junior Vita Tonga tore the ACL in his right knee in a Week 1 loss to Coppell. He had surgery to repair his knee on Friday, just in time to be on the sideline with his teammates on Saturday as they faced off against Keller.
When it was time for the national anthem, Tonga's teammates told him to take his wheelchair and sit in the front.
But he didn't feel comfortable sitting. Instead, he took a stand.
Sad News
A high school football player from Pearland Shadow Creek, who played in a game Friday night and needed medical attention on the sidelines, died Saturday morning.
There was no cause of death available for the Houston Chronicle story that reported the death of Chase Lightfoot, a defensive tackle. Lightfoot was a junior at Shadow Creek, a school in the Alvin ISD that opened this year.
