Texas commit Damion Miller will lead his John Tyler Lions against Plano West Saturday at noon at Rose Stadium.

It's Here!

Welcome to Texas High School football’s 2016 season! Lots of excitement is in the air with the season openers looming this weekend.

We won’t have to wait long to see just how good some of these teams are that are ranked so high. The scheduling gods certainly delivered this year, pitting some awesome openers that give us even more reason to be excited.

Some sixteen weeks from now, we’ll be crowning new state champions. But for now, it’s WEEK #1 and everybody is 0-0. Who will emerge in each region of the state? What stars will come out of nowhere and make their names this season? Katy vs Westlake in Week 1? Are you kidding me?

The Texas Longhorns’ relatively small class of committed recruits all have reasonable to great chances of winning their district championships and moving on to the playoffs. We’ll keep up with them here week by week, providing their stats and team results.

Texas football teams were asked not to schedule IMG Academy; Georgia teams now banned from doing it
By Matt Wixon, Dallas Morning News

There's no doubt that IMG Academy has attracted some extremely talented football players. There's also little doubt about the feelings many high school football coaches and administrators have about the academy in Florida.

Glen West, president of the Texas High School Coaches Association, said earlier this year that IMG could "destroy our profession" because of the way it recruits players from Texas. (It got one recruit from Allen earlier this year, and according to some coaches, had been reaching out to Allen players in previous years).

West asked that Texas high school coaches not schedule games with IMG, which played against Prestonwood Christian in 2014 and DeSoto last year. IMG's schedule this year doesn't include any Texas teams.
The schedule might not include any more Georgia teams after this season.

According to GwinnettPrepSports.com, the Georgia High School Association changed some wording in its rules Monday that prevents schools from scheduling IMG in future seasons. (IMG does have a matchup this season against Georgia powerhouse Grayson that is scheduled to be on ESPN).

The reason for GHSA making the change will sound familiar. From the GwinnettPrepSports story, here's what a member of the GHSA Executive Committee said:
"Now [GHSA schools] can only play schools that are members of their own high school association in their state and they have to be full members with no restrictions, so IMG cannot play teams from Georgia again. ... In Florida,
several restrictions. They aren't a member school. They're only a member in the fact that they pay dues. They can't go to the playoffs. They can't play in the state championship. ... They recruit and try to get the best players they can."

Back in April, there was an interesting back-and-forth on Twitter that included Texas high school coaches and IMG assistant coach Richard Bartel, a former star quarterback at Grapevine who coached in Texas at Prestonwood Christian, Argyle Liberty Christian and Fort Worth Southwest Christian.

In his comments, Bartel said, "Coaches, when you campaign against IMG, you campaign against your profession."

My Weslaco Panthers will be welcoming defending 5A DI state champions Richmond George Ranch down to the RGV on Saturday. Looking to see if they can make it entertaining! Sad I can't be there, but looking forward to hearing about it. #RGVFootball

Didn't GR move up a class this year? Plus, they lost a lot from last year's team. I have a classmate whose son was an OL (now at Tech) there last year. They were dominant.

Thanks Sirhornsalot, I'm really interested in the CH vs BG game. remember couple years back my dad took me to Texas. Cause i fell in love with UT after 05 and wanted to go there. Went to a high school game was completely in awe.

They did. They are now in 6A, so we'll see what they can do this year. Last year, GR steamrolled through the playoffs... Can't remember the RBs name, but he definitely made a name for himself in the playoffs. I'm excited that my Valley school is exploring the state and lining up some big time matchups

Can't remember his name, either. But I think he ended up at TCU.

Poppy Brown showed out in the game. Holy jumping Jesus that was crazy. I heard that game on radio. I had to work and couldn't make it to Tyler. That was Easy Texas game of the week

Doubt it. From the score, it doesn't seem like anybody did anything on defense for either side.
