Looks like UT-A&M football will be back at some point.
Texas AD: I just love playing the Aggies; UT-A&M rivalry renewed in NCAA baseball regional
HOUSTON — After Texas drubbed Texas A&M 8-1 on Friday in the opening game of the NCAA baseball tournament’s Houston regional, new UT athletic director Steve Patterson remarked to an Austin-American Statesman reporter: “I just love playing the Aggies.â€
Before the highest-profile resumption of the rivalry yet, Patterson had been rather emotionless about playing A&M.
When SportsDay questioned him earlier this week on playing the Aggies in sports other than football, he’d offered: “We haven’t really talked about it.â€
For those who have indeed missed the Horns and Aggies meeting regularly in football and otherwise since A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC in 2012, Friday offered some respite in baseball, which will have to do for now.
The teams fanned out on either side of home plate at Rice’s Reckling Park as the national anthem played, the Maroon along the third-base line, the Burnt Orange along the first.
A stadium-record 6,603 turned out, but the blowout, with UT jumping out to a big lead behind a four-run third inning, didn’t allow intensity to fester. Even during the rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game†during the seventh-inning stretch, the “root, root, root for the [insert Longhorns or Aggies here]†didn’t generate much of a fight.
But as Patterson’s comment underlined, there is always something inherently bubbling between the schools. (It was announced Friday that Texas earned about $23 million last year from the Big 12 and A&M took home about $21 million from the SEC.)
“It was an honor,†Texas shortstop C.J. Hinojosa said of Friday’s game. “I thought we were never going to play them again and I don’t think we were supposed to. It was fun.â€
