Search firms (coaching searches)

Search firms are great IMO. Like "Texas Strong" put in his tweets, it helps to give you a different perspective. It weeds out candidates that aren't good enough, cost too much money and just aren't interested.

Then you get a list of coaches who are interested and the search firm keeps those candidate's agents informed of the process. That candidate can either wait it out or ask to be removed from the process altogether.

Patterson wouldn't be going all in on Shaka if he didn't feel confident that he can lock him up.

the point about bama wishing they had a firm vet Marshall (assuming they didn't, of course) is a good one. It now appears the great Crimson Tide is about to get punked by wichita-freeking-state. talk about egg-on-face.

Marshall effectively used Alabama interest to get a raise. It happens

Who knew Wichita State has the resources to bump him up to $3.3MM per year? Bama's AD, Battle, did his job to the best of his abilities. How does using a search firm prevent this from happening?

It's really just a difference in hiring philosophies. Patterson sees the value in letting the search firm do the preliminary leg-work and wants more extensive vetting & CYA background checks. That's okay, but it comes with a price.

Patterson can just as easily pick up the phone and call Smart's agent, assuming he has one.

To me, this one was the moneyball

As image-conscious as Texas is, we do not want to be publicly turned down

For example, everyone knows Smart turned down UCLA and NC St before us.

We dont want that kinda information out there.  The "search committee" insulates us somewhat from that possibility

True - we don't want to be turned down because WE'RE TEXAS.

But, how much "insulation" do we have now that it's public knowledge Patterson is headed to Richmond to meet with Smart? These leaks are almost unavoidable at high-profile programs with or without a search firm. I believe Marshall was sincerely interested in Bama, but declined after WSU met his price.

Indeed.  if he turns us down after all this then the "search committee" has failed

And shall be hung from the highest tree

God rest their souls

LOL

That's not what I said, but yeah, the search firm's high-priced "vetting" should be complete before Patterson makes the official visit. It looks like a done deal, so we got our money's worth .....I guess.  ;)
