FINAL: Texas 3 - Stanford 1

Texas baseball needed a standout performance to help them break a four game losing streak that started last weekend against USD, and that's exactly what they got from starting pitcher Parker French. After opening the game with five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, French earned the win, finishing with 7 IP while striking out four and only allowing one run. Kirby Bellow earned his first save of the season by pitching the final two innings.

The Longhorns scored in the top of the 1st inning on a two out, RBI single from Tres Barrera, and added a pair of runs an inning later on an RBI double by Collin Shaw (also a two out hit). Stanford's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth.

Texas and Stanford will play a 4th game on Sunday at 3:00PM (CST) with the Cardinal holding a 2-1 edge thus far in the series.

Augie Garrido: “It took everybody to win today’s game. Parker French led the way with his experience and his ability to throw the ball in the strike zone, and he used all his fielders. There were some great defensive plays and that’s what this team is capable day after day. That’s the way we have to play – we have to play great defense, and we did. We came out and scored all three runs with two outs and never gave up on an inning. We tried to extend the inning, which is what we’ve been working on."

Augie Garrido: "We’re moving in the right direction with this thing. It’s just going to be a battle. There’s no easy way to develop a championship mentality. It’s all about how you respond to the adversity you face that makes you mentally tougher.”

If y'all watched the game stream today, you saw Brett Boswell quietly put together a fantastic defensive game. He had 5 assists and snagged about anything that was hit his way, all the while showing us that he has a laser beam attached to his right shoulder. Damn that kid can play some ball.

Well said, Augie. That is so true for all people in all facets of life, whether you're

competing in sports or just a normal person dealing with everyday life. Responding to

adversity...overcoming it...moving ahead in proactive fashion after things go bad for

you...doing your best to succeed and win despite adversity...that is what character is

all about.

This team's ceiling on defense is ridiculously high. They're going to make a couple of highlight reel worthy plays in every series. Their challenge is going to be to execute 100% of the easy ones and know when to pocket the baseball instead of trying to make a play.

Hitting will be just fine. There will be ebbs and flows with this team as there are without baseball teams. I think there are people out there that have the expectations that this team should have all batters 1-9 rack up multiple hits every game and nevrr have poor ABs. Oh, and win every game and go undefeated. Hey, if love that, but it to my knowledge an undefeated season has never occurred in baseball. :)

Enjoy the season, the fact that Texas is playing one of the toughest schedules in D1 and not playing the likes of Holy Cross and Dartmouth in non-conference series.

Did a quick estimated measurement this morning on Google Earth of Cantu's throw from the wall down the line to 3B in the bottom of the third inning to get Branton out after French's errant pickoff attempt, and this is what I came up with.  I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but it's not that far off.
