Who: Texas Longhorns 1-2 (0-0) vs. Kansas Jayhawks 2-1 (0-0)
When: Saturday September 27, 2014 at 3:00 PM
Where: Kivisto Field at Memorial Stadium, Lawrence KS
Odds: Texas -14
The Good:
There hasn't been a lot of good for Kansas despite a 2-1 record to start. They barely survived against FCS school Southeast Missouri before suffering a blowout loss to Duke in week 2. The Jayhawks did rebound to defeat Central Michigan 24-10 this past week behind a solid performance by Montell Cozart. Cozart has always been more of a threat with his legs, but is trying to develop into a better passer under Charlie Weiss. For those Kansas fans seeking a silver lining in this weekend's matchup, this is a Texas team that hasn't put it all together yet and has historically not played well in Lawrence. The Jayhawks have also found some success in their ground game and are facing a Texas team that has struggled to stop the run in the past two games.
The Bad:
Charlie Weiss is already on the hot seat as Kansas has not improved much under him. There also isn't a lot of talent on either side of the ball. The defense is giving up an average of over 400 yards per game and has had trouble against the run themselves. The matchup doesn't get easier against the talented duo of Malcolm Brown and Jonathan Gray who are looking to kickstart their seasons with a big day on Saturday.
The Uncertain:
Both teams have been a mess at times this season, and even though the talent advantage points toward Texas, we don't really know what to expect from either team. Kansas has been destroyed by the only good team they've played this season while limping to unimpressive victories over two poor teams. Texas dominated the only bad team they played this season before suffering a blowout to BYU and a heartbreaker to UCLA. Both teams have something to prove and will be desperate for a win in Saturday's matchup.
What's at Stake:
Regardless of the level Texas is playing at, it would be a landmark event for Kansas to defeat them. A win could provide confidence and serve as a springboard for the victor. This game also opens conference play for both teams and could set the tone for the coming weeks.
