Augie Garrido: "As for us, we're still very one dimensional, offensively. We hope to get more consistency from more players throughout the lineup with the offensive parts - hitting, taking pitches, and scoring runs. It's all about run scoring as we move along. It's typical that a few of the players will get off to a great start, hitting .400-something. Then others will hit .100 or .125 or even .085 or some number like that. Then all of a sudden it switches. Then it starts to even out, and the team takes on an identity over the course of the year. We're in the early phases of all that."

Augie Garrido: "What we need to do to get better is broaden the dimension and scope of our offense - getting the bunts down and doing the kinds of things to get more runners on base. There are different kinds of ways to take advantage of the defense than just hitting. Hitting is the hardest skill in all of sport. If that's the only way you can win the game and that's the only skill you have to win the game, then you go against pitching."

Augie Garrido: "Marlow is hurt. He's got a groin injury. I think it all comes from trying to get back out there. We don't know how serious it is at this point."

Augie Garrido (on Connor Mayes): "He was a lot more comfortable - a lot more relaxed on the mound. I'm glad we got him out there against Rice, and he did well there. But he didn't have the same electricity in his step that he had here. That comes from relaxation & focus. He felt very confident. He's a good pitcher"

Augie Garrido: "We want to take advantage of what the defense will give us. We cannot do that from pitch to pitch right now. Our minds just don't work that fast. I have to remember when a freshman or sophomore is playing....when you're really playing championship baseball, you can give one sign and it contradicts what you wanted them to do on the last pitch. So you go from pitch to pitch to pitch, and they still do that with confidence. We're not there yet. We're just not - that's what I mean by being 'one dimensional'. But we're hitting better than ever, so I'll be thankful for what we've got, and work on what we don't got."

Ben Johnson: "My approach [at the plate] is the same as it's always been. I'm only gonna lead off one time a game, at the very start of it. I try not to look at it that way. It's all about situations. Obviously when I'm leading off, I'm trying to do whatever it takes to get on base. But I've been coming up in a lot of situations like a 3, 4, or 5 hitter with runners on 2nd and one out. You just gotta deal with the situation."

Connor Mayes: "Guys [college players] are a lot stronger. You've got to change speeds a lot more. It definitely taught me a lot tonight - using fastball/change-up and seeing how it makes your fastball seem faster. I didn't use it in high school, it felt great to be able to use it out here. I definitely learned a lot."

Connor Mayes: "Every game is the same really - once you get on the mound and the batter is in the box, it's really the same thing. On Friday [at Rice] I was a little bit nervous at first, but once I threw that first pitch I realized it's no different than usual. It felt good."

Connor Mayes: "I've played this game for a long time. I've just got to do my thing. It's like he [skip Johnson] told me on Friday night when he came out to the mound is to just do your thing....that definitely helped me. I just gotta realize this game is no different and I've just got to do my thing."

Is he your Tuesday Starter for the Rest of the Season?? Or could he be moved to the weekend??

Tres Barrera: "It was great to be back here at the Disch and play in front of our fans. Even though it was a little cold and that scared away a few people, there was still a good turnout. We wanted to come out here and get a 'W'."

Tres Barrera (on his homerun): "I didn't hit the ball square. That probably wouldn't have gone out with the old ball."

Tres Barrera: "Baseball is tricky sometimes - you hit the ball hard and don't get hits. You're definitely going to see a lot more aggressive at bats from this team. We worked on that in the offseason. Everybody is feeling that pretty well right now, and if we keep that up, we're gonna be tough to beat."

A couple of thoughts.

1-Mayes looked comfortable. I can see why some have thought he might eventually be the 3rd starter.

2-I hope we keep both Cantu and Barrera in the lineup together. Cantu hasn't done anything spectacular but I can't recall him having a bad at bat yet.

3-Teams should probably stop pitching to Johnson.

4-I was surprised how comfortable McGuire looked on the mound.

5-I'm liking this new ball.

If past precedence is an indicator, Augie & Skip will keep him at him at midweek for 6-8 weeks & let him work progressively longer in games.

One of the key differences you hear freshmen comment on (re: the difference in college ball) is the number of games played. For his sake, the last thing the coaches want is for him to run out of gas and have it result in him getting get hit hard on a couple of outings.

Having said all that, it's a dynamic situation - everything is dependent on how Clemens/Sawyer look over the next few weeks.

If we have good pitchers, Clemens needs to go back to first. He was lights out there, and we need to shore up the defense.  If the guys we saw last night keep coming on, we need him at first more than we need him at pitcher.
