National Champs - Women's Volleyball

Pretty dominant performance in a championship match. The 3rd set was definitely tight, down 22-24 but 4 straight points (3 off of serves by Akana including the clinching Ace) sealed the deal.

This may be the best Texas Volleyball team ever. I watched a lot of 2008 team in person, this team was better.

And National player of the year Logan Eggleston is probably the best player we've ever had.

Had a watch party at the house last night for the game. The 1st set was like 2 heavy weights standing toe to toe and slugging it out. The 2nd set was all Texas as they held Louisville to a minus hitting percentage. The 3rd set was another slug fest with mega excitement. Down 24-22, after having a 20-16 lead, Texas reeled off 4 points in a row to win the set/match/National Championship! ?

Eggleston was on fire. After a so-so night on Thursday, she came out with a vengeance with 10 kills in the 1st set alone. Skinner, Phillips and O'Neal helped with the offense for Texas. Fleck, Torres and next year's libero Halter (#2) led the defense for the Horns.

Eggleston (MVP), Skinner and Torres (setter) made the all-tournament team. I personally thought Phillips should have made it and Fleck got beat out by the Louisville libero, who was really good, probably due to all the aces she had.

If I was a young single man, I would have offered to comfort DeBeer (#14 for Louisville) last night after her loss. ?

Losing that 20-16 lead had me feeling real nervous. Fighting off 2 set points is not easy to do. If you lose that 3rd set, anything can happen with a fresh slate in set 4 and momentum with Louisville. Set 5s are always toss ups given the brevity of the 15 point set.

Heart of a champion to nip it in the bud and storm back in set 3 for the win!

I left off O'Neal on the all-tourney team above, my bad. Neither libero was picked (shame on the selection committee, they should have picked one!) and after rewatching the game yesterday, Fleck should have been selected to the team even without the aces. She played lights out. Speaking of being left off the team, Phillips should have been picked over Jones (Louisville) as the OP hitter.

I rewatched the game yesterday. The Horns were a hitting machine. Louisville was ranked 6th in the country in hitting defense and the Horns were #1 in offense. The Horns hit above their average (.371) and out blocked (9 to 4) the Cardinals on defense. The Horns also held Chaussee (#9 & their stud OH) to only .156 hitting percentage and 12 kills with most were in the 1st set. They also didn't let Kong (#10 their dominant MB) into the game at all, she finished with only 2 blocks (had 10+ in the semi), 1 kill & hit -.286.

As BWilk stated above, coming back at the end of that 3rd set was huge!

It was an awesome game to watch.

Anyone know how long the tower will be lit?
