Well, this has been a VERY interesting week to say the least. Patterson being named AD. The subsequent fall-out from folks concerned that Mack is coming back in '14 (how folks make THAT connection I'll never know!) Oregon getting man-handled by Stanford for 3+ quarters of football. And of course, Baylor putting a beat-down on the WORST OU team Bob Stoops has had in the past 10 years.
On to observations:
1. Let me go on record in saying that I am REALLY excited about the hiring of Steve Patterson as AD. I think he is a complete breath of fresh air. I have read his track record. I have seen how he is not afraid to "upset the apple cart" by shaking things up with the establishment. Let me just say this, Bellmont is a BLOATED, UNDERPERFORMING entity and has been so for several years now. We have had an AD that has been "coasting" towards retirement ever since the completion of the LHN. In the meantime, Rome is burning. A&M has become a National Power. MY GOD, BAYLOR has become a National Power. In the meantime, we are pointing to being 6-0 in a weak conference with our only quality win of the season coming against the worst OU team Stoops has fielded in years! And we're supposed to be HAPPY with that? How can any University of Texas Alum be happy with where we are today as a program? I can assure you, if Steve Patterson has ANY pride when it comes to UT Athletics (and I am sure he does!) then he must be seething as much as the rest of us are right now. Despite the "Politically Correct" Press Conference yesterday, I really DO believe MASSIVE changes are coming. It begins with Mack, continues with Barnes, and ends up with Augie all being out after coaching their respective last seasons. By the way, I would be surprised if Chris Plonsky isn't toast as well.
2. I had posted after the OU win that OU was the worst team Stoops had ever fielded since being at OU. I went on to say that I saw 2-3 more losses in them before the end of the season. If Mack is pointing to beating OU as a reason that he should return in '14 well then he's going to have to do better than that to keep his gig. Baylor exploited OU and bullied the Sooners around much the same way we did. I NEVER thought I would ever see this day come but Baylor had SIGNIFICANTLY more team speed than OU. They just ran away from OU. Another thing that I have clamored for for YEARS is the best way to attack OU is throwing the ball DOWN the field. That has ALWAYS been the case with OU. How many UT Offensive Coordinators have we seen over the years try to beat OU running from sideline to sideline? If you want to beat OU you attack them DOWN the field. Baylor just embarrassed OU and Stoops last night by continuing to play THEIR game. They didn't take their foot off the pedal. They just kept the needle pegged for 60 minutes and embarrassed the Big 12 bully and had fun doing it! THAT is the type of system kids want to play in. NOT playing not to lose! NOT playing to just run out the clock! Style points matter to kids when it comes to recruiting. By the way, OU has their OWN issues. NOTE TO BOB STOOPS: Take a look at Mack Brown and what he is going thru right now, because that is what awaits you in 2 more years.
3. David Shaw's squad PUNCHED Oregon in the face for 3+ quarters. They just kept landing body blow after body blow. The job that Stanford Offensive Line did on Oregon's Defensive Front was a masterpiece. Those guys just MASH people up front. And the job Derek Mason did in preparing his defense for this high-octane squad is just amazing! If I am a new Head Coach at the University of Texas, Derek Mason is the first call I make. His team is always in great position to make a play. And once those guys hit you they stick to you and finish the tackle- they just don't miss tackles. Jesse Palmer and David Pollack talked about how Stanford will drag you out to the deep water and I couldn't help but think "what a great analogy of how Stanford and Bama play football!" They just keep pounding and pounding and pounding. To Oregon's credit, they came back and made a contest of it. After some freakish plays, (blocked kick by Oregon for a TD and subsequent on-side kick recovery) the score was closer than it should have been. Call me a bitter old bastard that is old school however I LOVED seeing the quit in the Oregon receiver's eyes when he was crying on the sidelines. I just love the old-school approach that schools like Bama & Oregon employ however I am convinced that the spread is the way offenses of modern football today. Saddens me but I am realistic about it.
4. How does ANYONE think Steve Patterson (an acknowledged hatchet man) being hired is a good thing for Mack Brown? Hell, as Chip reported yesterday, Mack found out about Patterson's hiring via twitter. Being left out of knowing who your next boss is going to be until he is announced, please tell me how that is a GOOD thing for Mack? If anything it shows how out of the process Mack is. Furthermore, despite what Patterson may have said during his presser yesterday, really what DID you expect the guy to say? Did you want him to quote Kenny Powers by saying, "you're elfin' out and Saban or someone else elfin' in?" It doesn't work that way. Of course he is going to say what he said during the press conference yesterday. If he were to step up to the podium and say, "this whole God D@mned thing is a elfin' mess that Deloss has left behind for me to clean up" how would that make Deloss look after 35 years? Hell, think about your relationship with your boss one on one. Think about your relationship with your wife. Think about your relationship with you kids. What is said in public and what is said in private are 2 separate conversations.
5. The way the situation with Saban is going down is not ideal however he is a big boy and all of the same issues that faced Nick before (financial opportunities, wife wanting to get the Hell outta Tuscaloosa, etc.) have not changed. I understand that McPhaul is posting 60% coming to Austin but I also know in talking to him that he would prefer being conservative in his estimation to the masses then say "it's a done deal and he's coaching the Horns in '14 GUARANTEED!" Those of you that know Darrell know that he doesn't work that way. This, like all matters pertaining to UT Athletics, are fluid. Need proof look no further than Patterson being selected over Luck as AD. I think if you were to pump a few drinks of truth serum in McPhaul you might find that he would be surprised if Saban isn't coaching in Austin come next season. But I'll let him speak for himself.
6. If Saban does not want to come to Texas or balks at all, the first call I make is to Art Briles. This program needs to be rebuilt. If Art Briles can build Baylor into a National Champion Contender imagine what he could do at UT?
7. Anybody notice last night how Phil Bennett's defense brought the wood last night to OU? I did!
8. I am convinced that there isn't just 1 ideal Head Coach for the University of Texas but closer to 10-15 ideal candidates (Pro & College). With the type of Financial Packages we are looking at putting together, don't underestimate the interest NFL Head Coaches, Coordinators, & Coaches will have to come to Austin. Folks, this is a new day dawning at the 40 Acres. We have been saying for a while now that it will no longer be business as usual at Bellmont and the 40 Acres. The hiring of Steve Patterson as AD is your first evidence of proof.
9. One of the things that no one is talking about from McPhaul's Crossfire was the part in which Jimmy Sexton told some of our BMD's names of the potential AD's he would prefer working for. The list included Patterson, Haden (USC), Long (Arkansas), Castiglione (OU), and Tanner (South Carolina). Oddly enough, Luck's name was not mentioned. Why not?
10. Another thing that was very interesting that went undiscussed was the part regarding Rex Tillerson & Nick Saban and their Oil & Gas deals that they have contingent upon Nick coming to Austin. That is HUGE and I haven't seen that posted anywhere else. If true, that is fascinating stuff that moves the needle favorable to the good guys gaining Saban's services next season.
11. I have stated time and time and time again what has been shared with me from BMD's is that with the LHN, IMG, ESPN, and the impact on UT Athletics donations/season tickets for '14 it is simply just too costly to keep Mack around for another year. There is just too much money at stake! Complacency and mediocrity cannot be tolerated because it is too expensive!
12. Regarding Conference Affiliation, with the hiring of Steve Patterson I believe EVERYTHING will be on the table. IMHO I believe that even includes the SEC. Would I bet on the SEC? Probably not but it wasn't even a consideration before.
13. Regarding playing the Aggies again? Again, with the hiring of Steve Patterson EVERYTHING will be on the table HOWEVER it won't start back up again (IMHO) until after our Football Program cures what's ailing it at the present.
14. For those of you that want to see us play the Aggies in the Cotton Bowl let me just say this: ARE YOU FREAKING CRAZY?!! They would EMBARRASS us!
15. I don't expect Sumlin back in Aggieland next season. I know I am not exactly going out on a limb here but I just don't think he's coming back. That is why it is important that if we don't get Saban we immediately get Briles otherwise instead of being a thorn in our side at Baylor and their limited funds, he will be with the bad guys with unlimited funds.
That's all I have for the weekend. Going to an Aggie Wedding in Columbus on Saturday so "whoop" and all of that other redneck bull$hit!
Hook 'em and beat the Hell outta the Hillbillies!
