The 2016-2017 season has proven to be a tough one for the Texas men's basketball team. The Longhorns are 1-5 in conference play, and are without key components on the court. Top scorer Tevin Mack has been indefinitely suspended for violating team rules, bringing the Longhorn offense to a slow speed. Coach Shaka Smart's team is also without a point guard, after Isaiah Taylor decided to relinquish his senior season to enter the NBA draft. With the Horns struggling this season, Smart, and the rest of the 40 acres, seem excited about the upcoming freshman class that will start at the university in the fall of 2017.
Sealing a Top Class
The 2017 recruiting class is ranked number eight, according to ESPN, with four current commits. Three of the four commits are amongst the ESPN 100, and all four are four-star recruits. This past week, Smart sealed the deal with recruit, Matt Coleman. Coleman will fill the much needed point guard position, as well as being a leader on the team. He exemplifies strong leadership skills on and off the court, which will help strengthen the chemistry that the team seems to be lacking.
Smart's Three Signees
Along with Coleman, Smart has already signed three players; Jericho Sims, Royce Hamm, and Jase Febres. Each signee plays a different position on the court, adding depth and talent to the lineup.
Sims is a center and stands at a whopping 6 ft. 8. Throughout high school, he was a strong rebounder and shot blocker. He would join current freshman James Banks asa center for the Longhorns.
Also standing at 6 ft. 8 is power forward Royce Hamm. Hamm is a strong three-point shooter, as well as being a strong blocker. With Texas currently lacking a power forward, Hamm would come in and be able to prove himself as a strong player for Smart.
Smart’s third signee is not one to be looked over. Jase Febres is a 6 ft. 5 shooting guard that also gives a mean block. Because shooting the ball has been a previous struggle for this Texas team, Febres will be able to come in and make the shots that the Longhorns have currently been lacking.
The Pressure is On
Smart is adding key players to his team next year, in hopes of rebuilding the program that has seemed to fallen this season. With the amount of talent and depth that these incoming freshmen bring, this group of young men will step up and take on the responsibility that has been placed before them.
