The University of Texas Longhorn Baseall team kicked off their '15-'16 campaign today. The weather was great for a little scrimmage, low 80's to start ended in the low 90's on this Sunday.

LHP Travis Duke Started for the Home Team(Coaching Staff kept switching up the players). LHP Ty Culbreth started for the Visiting Team. Both Pitchers went 3 innings. Each gave up home runs to the Catcher's, Tres Barrera & Michael Cantu. Tres Barrera was a 3 run shot while Cantu was a 2 run shot. Barrera went over the 375 foot sign in left field while Cantus’ went to right of that.

Barrera's at bats were very loud and noticable where he went 2-4 with his 2 outs were line shots.

Working the middle innings for both sides were LHP John Malmin and RHP Eric Dunbar. In the 6th and with Dunbar on the mound, Freshman Kody Clemens started off the inning with a single then stole 2nd. Then a walk,  a Sac Bunt by Freshman OF Brady Harlan(Also had some nice plays in the Outfield). My notes are a bit confusing, as the same 4 players came up twice in this inning. This is also where Cantu had his 2R Shot.

LHP Josh Sawyer and RHP Kacey Clemens worked the last 3 innings, Kacey working mostly to contact with a nice downhill plane.

Play of the game came off of left handed batter Patrick Mathis. Mathis turned on a pitched and laced one down the 1st baseline. Playing 1st Base(most of the day) #11 Travis Jones went to his left, put his glove down, the ball was hit so hard, that the ball ricocheted toward the 1st base. In the score book it will go down as a 3UA play. But to see it live was like WOW.

#17 Bret Boswell started at SS

#11 Travis Jones also had a triple to LCF

Augie Garrido addressed the team after the 9 inning scrimmage and emphasied old habits need to be broken, to get rid of the negative attitudes on when something did not go right. One of the goals Garrido told the team after the scrimmage was that the coaches will be working on Changing/Replacing old Attiutudes with Positive attitudes. He wants his team to be mentally tough.

To Note: I am working off of not having a Fall Roster.

Some numbers that I need to get the info;

#32, #37, #6(Think this was Macalla), #4, #41

Thanks Don. What did Barrera's approach look like, was he still collapsing the back side or was it more like the stroke he started the year with last year

Don,

They were wearing different jerseys at different times today, so there was likely some duplications. Numbers won't be finalized until the new stuff comes in this winter. Hitters were wearing jerseys for video purposes.

Bottom line, nice work today, but don't worry too much about not having the right names attached to a corresponding jersey.

I know.. but man it was confusing.. as some players played on both teams, batted for both teams..

Couple of other notes;

Zane Gurwitz was in attendance but did not dress out.

Also, the Orange and White Series will be on the 13-15th of October.

That's a bit deceiving too since we only had room for 10 commits. Everyone above us had more than 10 commits (a lot of teams ranked below us also). If Texas had room to take a couple more commits I bet it would have been a top 10 class. The quality seems to be there.
PerfectGame has Texas class ranked as the 18th best..

The coaching staff has also added an 11th member to the class, Catcher from Highland Park, Matthew White.

PerfectGame has ranked the top 350 players by Conference;

The Big 12;

Caught the last 6 innings of the scrimmage from today;

Kacey Clemens has really worked on his mound presence. Down Hill, mixed up his pitches well.

Odd Moment; Kacey was able to get an at bat, Walked(Pitcher was Eric Dunbar), which brought up Kody Clemens, Kody ripped a pitch inbetween 2nd and 1st.. Kacey tried to get out of the way, but the ball went off of him..

Tres Barrera and Michael Cantu continued to put the bat on the ball..

Freshman that is looking really good, Freshman from Corsicana, Brady Harlan. Reads the ball really well in the outfield and laced a double right down the right field line.

Cantu, ripped a pitch right into RCF, with Barrera behind home plate, Cantu takes off for 2nd, had a SB, but over slid the bag..

The team is scrimmaging Wednesday, Friday, & Sunday.

Also they are getting up and working out with S&C Stephen Whalen at 6:00AM

Any news on Hollingsworth and Cooper's health?

If those two are healthy we have an embarrassment of riches in terms of pitching.

I found the Auburn situation interesting this afternoon with both Sunny Golloway and Tom Holliday both essentially getting fired. Sunny was fired with cause and Tom suspended. This has a chance to get really interesting.

If Cantu is hitting the ball hard back up the middle he's going to be a freak. I don't think I've ever been as high on a hitter. He got a little pull happy last year, but you know freshman.

Coach Golloway was very hot about being let go..

He had some choice words for Jay Jacobs
