After Sunday's loss in Lincoln, Augie Garrido called Tuesday's upcoming game against TAMUCC, "Opening Day". Now, the next day, word is that Garrido and Skip Johnson are going to start Kyle Johnston.

There are all kinds of tangents to this move that make it even more interesting than it is in and of itself.

When I said in the game thread that if I were AG this is where I would play my explosion card, I think that's exactly what he's doing

This team needs a fresh start. Their potential has definitely not been brought out yet

I love this move on several fronts.. 1st of all, Johnston just comes out of the pen ready to go.. He wants the ball.. Only problem.. he tries to hit 96 on the gun all of the time and then wither his balls are flat or they miss the zone.. This way he knows that he has too pitch instead of throw the ball...

Donald, am I translating correctly:

He knows he is in for a marathon, not a sprint, and this is a great opportunity.  Therefore, he needs to be steady and consistent.  Is that about right?

I think this move also opens up the weekend bullpen a bit more for guys like Schimpf, McGuire, etc. to get some more work.

Opening Day ........Its just Augie talking his philosophical stuff.

As far as hitting goes.....Hitting is pretty simple. ( some say the hardest thing in sport )...Study scouting reports on pitcher and be patient at the plate, when you swing swing level and stay balanced and knock the piss out of the ball.....If our players would do that ; with our talent we would be tough to beat.

that's good advice. Simple and on point.
In the same way, here's how you get laid by super models. Be really rich or be a famous athlete or actor. Works every time.

Who let thorns1 on this board?  :D
thorns1?  yep.  nailed.  i should have known i couldn't get the subterfuge past your astuteness.

well, i've been calling for a hitting coach and a change in offensive philosophy for three years, so it's nothing new.  you're just now waking up to the fact?  you are slow on the pickup, joey.  sort of like our infield of late.  the fact that i'm not a great fan of augie's offensive philosophy, or that i can look thru my normally orange tinted glasses to see something that ain't right doesn't make me less of a fan than you.

i'm a long, long, long time fan, going back to the 50's and sometimes long time fans see trends.  the trend i am seeing is that we are just not able to hit worth a shit.   We are a team of talented kids that need a new mindset.  A mid course correction.

Nebraska is not that much better than we are, but they sure looked like it.  yes, i understand slumps happen, but i think a change is needed to break out of this slump.  obviously, a mid season coaching change isn't in the cards, but something has to change and Augie has to be the one to change it.  the ol' status quo ain't working.

fortunately, i think that's what street is alluding to in his post, and what augie is referring to in his statements about a new season beginning tonight.  i am going to bet something similar to the shower scene in Bull Durham has occurred behind the scenes and out of camera view.  maybe not the youtube meltdown captured a few years ago, but something.  one can only hope, at least.

and i am doing my part.  my lucky hat has been sidelined until further notice.   benched.  offered a position in the home office but available for late season duty if needed.

i am going with a freshman hat tonight.  pristine burnt orange with the familiar baseball block T.

the new season begins tonight at 6.  it has to begin tonight.  Okie Lite looms large on the ol' horizon.

you do not have a f##king clue.

From a hitting approach standpoint, this year's team is already completely different than teams from the recent past. This bunch swings freely, and tries to put lift/backspin on everything they hit. This year's approach is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the high-pressure, small-ball approach that Garrido favors.

Whether we'll see a mandated change to the opposite end of the spectrum (i.e. small-ball) or if they'll try to blend things in a situationally appropriate approach remains to be seen.

Whoa. BREAKING NEWS.

Coach Slim making the tough decision to bench his superstar for the good of the team. Is this the passing of the torch?

well, that's a terrific observation.  now all you have to figure out is how to put backspin on a ball that is swung at and missed 33 times in three games.    :(
