DFW vs the Golden Triangle this week
Ranked Kennedale meets ranked West Orange Stark in Nacogdoches Friday
(courtesy TexasHSFootball)
Two of the best in Class 4A duke it out Friday as the West Orange-Stark Mustangs take on the Kennedale Wildcats. The two teams meet up at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night in Nacogdoches.

West Orange-Stark enters Friday’s showdown with a 30-game winning streak thanks in part to a strong defense that gave up just 58 points en route to a state title last season. The two-time defending Class 4A Division II state champions have picked up where they left off from last year, despite the start of their season being delayed due to Hurricane Harvey. Mustang great and aptly-named signal caller Jack Dallas is gone, but Chaka Watson and running back Kavyn Cooper are there to lead the Mustangs attack.

On the other side, Kennedale is coming off an appearance in the state semifinals last season and are off to another strong 4-0 start in 2017. The Wildcats pride themselves on running the football and have two strong backs to go with in junior De’Shaun Kirven and senior Jaden Knowles. In just four games, the pair have rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 25 touchdowns in just four games. The Wildcats are also coming off a win over Whitehouse, a 5A program, and are looking to keep that momentum going.

Last year, Kennedale fell to West Orange-Stark 45-21, but it was the most points that anyone would score on the Mustangs all season long. With a lot of new starters on defense for the Mustangs and a strong rushing attack from Kennedale, can they snap the winning streak? Or will West Orange-Stark make their streak 31 in a row? We’ll find out Friday night in East Texas.

Alief Taylor at Pearland

This will be my first opportunity to see UT commit WR Brennan Eagles in person.  The Lions are a pass heavy team, which is surprising considering the losses to graduation includes QB Dontay Warren (Northern Colorado).  Eagles is NOT the leading receiver for Alief Taylor as QB McFarland has looked to Jr WR Shea Whiting (6-3 180) more to the tune of 16-332-4.  This could simply be that Eagles is receiving safety help from opposing teams, but noteworthy none the less.  Eagles should draw coverage from CB Auston Deason.  Taylor DE Joseph Ogunbanjo (6-3 220) has been unstoppable in 3 games with 27 tackles, 7 TFL and 4.5 sacks.

Pearland has struggled with injuries losing 4* Jr DE Gilbert Ibeneme and their best OL Dawson Murdock Jr.  The Oilers are run heavy with RB Evan Burgess and RB Jaelin Benefield leading the way.  Jr QB Austin Landry is still evolving as a passer but has delivered explosive plays the last couple of weeks.  ILB DeAntoine Carter is long and athletic and will limit the Lions running game, which has struggled to this point in the season.  HC James Farmer took over for Tony Heath following his retiring this past summer.  Farmer served as DC on Heath's staff and continues to make the calls on the defensive side of the ball.

7:00 kickoff from The Rig, Pearland

NOTE:  WR Brennan Eagles had a 74 yard TD reception on Alief Taylor's initial possession, but left midway through the 1st quarter after he was tackled on a kickoff return.  He was helped off the field by two trainers with an apparent lower body injury of some kind and did not return.
