Former UT quarterback Shannon Kelley on how to prepare a 2nd string QB

Last year in Provo, BYU turned UT's defense into the Red Sea every time they ran the QB draw. I'm wondering if a little turnabout might just work out for Tyrone.

Perhaps, however you need a hat for a hat in order for a draw to have a high percentage for success. There are many O-Line coaches that hate the draw if they can't get a hat for a hat in the box. But, when you have a freak (VY) at the helm, he could call "me on three" and nothing else mattered..He was just that freakish of an athlete!!

I think in order for it to get called, first it has to be in their playbook, and secondly, the match ups in the box need to be right.

I alSo believe the staff will want to get Heard in the game if they believe Ash is not returning in the near future. If Ash is gone then Heard would be just one hit away from being the only QB. That's not what you want with UCLA and OU a few weeks away. So even if Swoopes plays lights out I think the thing to watch is whether or not Heard is inserted at some point. It may be a not to veiled indication of the staffs thoughts on Ash's future.

Grace under pressure. Predicting who has it and who doesn't is a real crap-shoot.

Gotta think that if a second QB is warranted for any reason it will be Heard entering the game. Can't envision a scenario where a walk on, Holtz, will be inserted by this coaching staff if we are still in the game. Could be smoke screen from Watson on heard not playing, but on the other hand why would we need to conceal a plan to play heard unless he has some magical ability to play like a seasoned vet?!

In my view, you are spot on. It's not a smoke screen. Watson isn't concealing anything.. like you said, there is no seasoned vet.

True and this is differance between Good and Great. However, based on film (and a lot of it) you can lower your odds of a complete bust. You have to do an immense amount of homework while recruiting kids. Think of it this way, college coaches spend an unbelievable amount of time (although regulated by the NCAA) EVALUATING KIDS. Watch a ton of film, try to ask the right questions, find out as much as possible when making a decision on who you pull the trigger on. That said, the NFL spends millions of dollars trying to get the right draft picks and every single year, they have busts.

At the end of the day, all you can do, is all you can do. I wouldn't categorize it as a "crap shoot", but there is definitely risk involved. You just try and minimize it the most you can. Thx

The only reason I can think of, for inserting Lou Holtz's grandson, is the desperate attempt to preserve Heards red shirt.

Based on Stong's comments I would have to say that he hasn't given up on the season yet - but I wonder.
