I think this award was designed with Stanford in mind.

Stanford runs an entirely different athletics business model than UT. Much like the military academies (except A&M), Duke, ND, etc, Stanford wants every student to also participate in a sport. UT is running a Steve Patterson bastardized version of Deloss Dodds' model of fielding only teams that can compete for championships with in-state recruits. The different business models make direct comparisons of the programs somewhat difficult.

Duke, do you know the percentages of students who participate in sports at ND, Stanford, Duke, service academies? Curious if that was published in something you saw.

Here is a good database to get a snapshot of each university's intercollegiate athletics program. It will give you total athletes, athletes by sport and gender, a count of athletes participating in multiple sports and also a rough breakdown of each school's revenues and expenses. because it is federal government mandate to report the info, this database contains info for the private institutions that don't have to respond to FOIA requests for info. This database also has total undergrad enrollment (as of Aug 31). I don't have any info on intramural participation at various schools. You can see from this link that Stanford has far more athletes participating in NCAA competition even though they have a only a fraction of the enrollment of UT.

Aggies are NOT a "military academy". . . . .

In fact less than half of their Corps of kiddie soldiers ever serves. . . .
