Had a chance to talk with start RB Gavin McDaniel of Coppell today. Great kid, great interview, and someone I think is going to get some offers during the season. Gavin is the younger brother of former Coppell and current Notre Dame RB/CB/Special Teams Ace Cam McDaniel.

The Measurables (per his Hudl):

Height - 5-9

Weight - 172

40 yd - 4.41

100 yd - 10.84

Vertical - 35 inches

Bench - 250lbs

Squat - 340lbs

Gavin is already a decorated athlete, starting at RB/Slot on Varsity as a Sophomore. He was a member of the 2011 Dave Campbell's Top 20 Sophomore Watch list. In 2012, Gavin was 1st Team All-District RB, the DFW Player of the Week vs Flower Mound, and had 952 yards rushing. He is a team Captain, and was Academic All State for the track team. Obviously, Gavin also performs in the class room, maintaining A's, while having a 25 on the ACT and a 1730 on the SAT.

Though still working hard for his first offer, Gavin has camped at Sam Houston, Baylor, Arizona State, Stanford, and has an upcoming trip to Colorado. He's done well at camps, and drew praise from the staff at Stanford, who know a thing or two about getting intelligent, hard working athletes. When asked where he'd like to go to school, Gavin said Stanford would be his first choice, but he is willing to play for any D1 school out there. He will be playing in the slot for Coppell this year in addition to his RB duties. Gavin is confident Coppell can go all the way this year, and I tend to agree with him.

For those not familiar, Coppell is the team who took down nationally ranked Allen last year, and Gavin had a big hand in the victory. Coppell will enter the season ranked #13 in the nation, and always plays a very tough schedule.

Watching Gavin on film, what stands out besides his exceptional speed is how hard he runs. He may weight 172lbs, but he brings the hammer like a kid near 220. Gavin also has exceptional ball skills and field vision. He's got all the tools to make it at the next level.

We'll keep track of Gavin during the year, and wish him luck this season.
