Commitment Spotlight: Bru McCoy

This is the highest rated player UT has ever recruited out of California as far as I can remember.. Ricky was around 50th nationally.

This is also the best out of state recruiting I've seen since I've been a Texas fan.Twelve out of the twenty four recruits are from out of state from seven states.

Bru should not have to sit a year. It would be a waste for UT. If Bru is as good as he should be then he will probably be here for three years. We won't get any benefit from a redshirt and he should be any to contribute next year.

It is going to make college football look bad if the NCAA says Bru has to sit a year while Kliff can go to the NFL  especially when USC said that NFL teams could not talk to him.

Rival Views: Should McCoy be able to play immediately at Texas?

National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate whether 2019 commitment

Bru McCoy
should be able to play right away after transferring from USC to Texas.

FARRELL’S VIEW: NO

No way. I understand that McCoy may have been mislead by Kliff Kingsbury when he was the offensive coordinator at USC for a short period of time, but that’s life. Sorry to break it to everyone, but coaches lie all the time and so many kids have signed with a school only to see a position coach or coordinator leave for an NFL job or someplace else.

If you allow McCoy to transfer without penalty after signing with USC you’re opening a door that can’t be closed. It won’t hurt McCoy to sit a year if that’s what he wants to do and no one forced him to enroll early or sign early. He could have waited until February to see if there would be any coaching changes but instead he decided to commit to USC.

Players should commit to a school for reasons other than just a coach and this is a great chance to set that example.

GORNEY’S VIEW: YES

No one is blaming Kliff Kingsbury for leaving USC so quickly especially when an NFL head coaching job becomes available, but no one should hold

Bru McCoy
to his decision, either. He should be immediately eligible if he decides on going to Texas, which looks almost definite at this point.

Days before making his commitment at the All-American Bowl – and the timeline seems to be foggy on when he actually signed his letter of intent – McCoy and his family sat down with the then-offensive coordinator for an in-home visit and Kingsbury broke down how the USC offense would run and what he envisioned for the program.

McCoy bought in and then days later Kingsbury was interviewing with the Arizona Cardinals and then took the job. So the five-star athlete who will play receiver in college is now supposed to be held to a commitment he made basically under false pretenses, to a school without an offensive coordinator, when he is no longer secure in that choice?

All the cliches about “pick a school for the school and not the coaches,” is just not how it works. Kids develop relationships with coaches and want to play for them, many times that’s where their loyalties lie. So McCoy, who’s been on USC’s campus only for a couple weeks, should be allowed to leave and head to Texas without any penalty – just like Kingsbury was allowed to leave for a better opportunity.

I'm with Gorney.  At this point,  USC has very little invested in McCoy. No tuition, no training, no playbook secrets.

I’d be surprised if Bru or Jordan Whittington play defense. Dudes like them don’t come along that often. We want them touching the ball as much as possible. Just my take

Yeah our defense is going to be a highlight of this team. I think our weakest unit will be LB.

Our DL is going to turn some heads this season.

hurts isn’t going to be able to air it out against us and our DL is going to put a hurting on him.
This is an interesting take since we lost our entire front 7.  I hope you’re right.

The pitch to Bru was to get him involved as a pass rusher on passing downs. Time will tell if that ends up being the case. I think Whittington will be a full time offensive guy.

It would be great to have Bru  rush the QB especially in the 4th quarter in a close games on key plays. It drives me crazy especially in the 4th quarter when the other team's QB has all the time in the world.

Bru looks like his body can take playing in college full time unlike Keaontay.

First, I feel confident that Bru McCoy is an outstanding player who will be successful at whatever position that he plays. I do have a question about the designation of "athlete", especially for a two way player like McCoy and how those ratings are determined.

If he only played offense or only played defense, would he be rated as a 5 star at either LB or WR?  Or could he be a high 4 star offensive player and a high 4 star defensive player, but since he plays both ways, it adds up to a 5 star athlete?

I read somewhere that he projects better at LB, but since he will touch the ball more on offense, he would help the team more there. Does that mean that he could be a 5 star LB and a high 4 star WR?

It's just the term "athlete" doesn't give me a solid picture and being a bit obsessive/compulsive I search for firmer ground to stand on.

Or maybe he's a coach's dream and is a 5* either way.

My wife puts a little twist on the OCD. She says I have a depressive repulsive disorder. Dang.

I do believe he projected slightly better as a linebacker.   But Bru made it clear that he wants his primary position to be WR.  Anyone who would have recruited him as a LB simply would not have been in the picture.

No. 8 Texas: Youth on defense

i

Although the Longhorns flashed their defensive capability in the Sugar Bowl win over Georgia, coordinator Todd Orlando's defensive unit will be relatively inexperienced next season with eight starters gone. Safeties Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster have star potential and the rest of the depth chart will be loaded with former blue-chippers. Still, much of the Texas defense will have plenty to prove in 2019. -- Trotter

My credibility was on the line with this kid.  I boasted on another site that a 5^ was coming and then he signed with USC, shocking my source and a few others.  My other guy said not to worry, but we worried.  A lot.

Bets were made and now I must foot a bill at Taste of Texas for 11 people.  I will learn to keep my big mouth shut and trust a little more.

Sadly, I turned on my friend like the rotten and blatantly coward that I am and said he lied - the kid is signed, sealed and delivered to SC and I would bet on it.

Afterward, I asked him if he would still provide me with Texas info and he said: "and miss the opportunity for more paid for meals?"   He delights in rubbing it in.  I delight in beating his ass on the golf course.  :)

Taste of Texas? Am I invited, Doc? Lol.
