Column: Character Revealed

Awesome article!

I love the statistics that back up just how well we are playing.  I'd be willing to wager that Texas is in the top ten in regards to all-around statistical performance.

My favorite stat is just how well Texas has played offensively with two outs.  That's what was missing last year, amongst many things.  These guys never give up and play to the last out.

This has been a fun year so far to watch these guys play.

There's some interesting stuff out there WRT to the entitlement concept and playing for the sake of the team instead. It adds insight into your statement (above). I'll do some digging and try to post some of it.

The team ERA is incredible and a big reason for the success.  Augie deserves all the credit he receives to-date for the outstanding job this team has performed.  I remember watching the Mark Payton interview before the season began with him saying the reason he came back this year instead of going pro was to get to Omaha.  They keep this up, they will get there!

Here you go....

"We spent all fall attacking what I think was our number one problem from last year, and that is the word entitlement. I think that we have taken really important steps forward in changing the attitude of being entitled and recognizing who we are, and changing that too. What are we going to do to serve the team? And how are we going to serve The University of Texas Baseball program and the athletic program. That was really our main mission. We didn't take as much time playing catch or taking batting practice as we did focusing on the mental parts of it all. Getting them focused on how to serve the team, how to be a great teammate, and what it takes to be mentally tough." - Garrido on 1/24/14

"You get each other's back. We really aren't as focused on the people that oppose us as we are on fighting for the guy next to us. Getting and keeping the rally going, that's what I'd like to see. I'd like to see us sustain rallies by getting two-out hits and scoring two-out runs and to get on base with two outs, then score a run." - Garrido on 2/13/14

Great stuff! That's just one of the many reasons why Augie has been as successful as he's been.

I sure hope they level the series this evening. If not, this column is going to get blamed for jinxing the team.

After losing two straight to TCU at home, I think we'll all look back at this article at the end of the season and be able to blame our second Big 12 series loss on Matt.

Thanks a lot!

Absolutely critical game today....bouncing back and winning today is the difference between "tip your cap to 2 amazing pitching performances" vs "taking 2-3 steps back and getting dominated".
